Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2278 comments #348.1 Deleted.
#348.2 It was nothing to do with different editions, just a difference in punctuation. I have combined. Please allow at least 20 minutes for the changes to display. :)
#348.3/4 Corrected. Combined with a third similar quote. I will have to check back later to see if the most complete version is the one that has saved.
#348.5 Edited & name of book added. I put dedication as a tag.
#348.6 Although these are all slight variances of the same quote, I don't know which one is the correct one. I looked at another source that gave it as pg 51. but I just had a quick skim of my copy - it isn't my pg 51 which is in chapter XII of my copy. Clare, if you have a copy can you tell me what chapter this is in. I've started trying to merge. I'll check when I get back from my trip if they have worked. Some were possibly rejected for not being similar enough. Edit. Completed. Please allow for caching.
#348.7 No likes so I have deleted.

"Your master never taught you a truer thing," said John; "there is no religion without love, and people may talk as much as they like about their religion, but if it does not teach them to be good and kind to man and beast it is all a sham—all a sham, James, and it won't stand when things come to be turned inside out."

#349.2 Combined the second, third & fourth one. For the other one I need advice from rivka or my fellow librarians.

This has a couple of likes but and soon the dogs were is just a fragment and not a wildly original remark

I've tried (for the first time!) the filter but so far no similar quote coming up. Should I leave or can I delete?

#350 Orphée I substituted your wording seeing you originally added the quote, but normally I'm not comfortable working with quotes that aren't in English. In future I would suggest making a separate post. :)
#351 Kristina we prefer editing to deleting quotes. Please let me know if I have done this correctly. I have removed the place & time as we don't record these things in GR quotes.

Fragments like that can be deleted even if they have likes. (But yes, should be merged instead when that is an option.)

Thank you rivka. I leave fragments if they seem to be original & hope that some one who knows the author's work can merge or add to. But this is just clutter. :)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2278 comments Clare wrote: "Thank you, Christmas Carol! And Rivka, thanks."

Thats ok Clare. I have just corrected the author to Anna Sewell on the one where you have found a source for the quote - which agrees with mine. I'll need to leave this for bit for the correction to show then I will merge them. You don't need to point out any more for Black Beauty. There are quite a few. I have made a note of them & will go through the Sewell quotes after Christmas. :)

Hello again, Christmas Carol. I'm not sure if this is a funky mix-up on Goodreads' end, but the link you provided with the haunted like still attached isn't either of the quotes I requested to be deleted in post 375. I'm good to wait for the moderator for those other issues, though. It's a busy season and I'm patient. Thank you again for looking into these for me. I'm hoping the other two links from 375 direct to the appropriate nonsensical sayings haha!

I checked again & it is the 7th one on your list
https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/8342...

For me it shows as 1 like but I can't find the person who liked it.

message 375: by Coco (new)

Coco (ericaalex) | 18 comments Christmas Carol꧁꧂ wrote: I checked again & it is the 7th one on your list

That's odd. The two quotes I posted for deletion on 375 were entirely separate from that list and I was sure not to include anything with likes after you explained those couldn't be done. One was "Be open to inspiration as you partake in the mundane" and the other, "It's time to make important noise." When I saw your reply that the "Some days I'm to sip you" quote (number seven on the list) was one of my new requests, I clicked both links in 375 to double-check whether I'd accidentally submitted the wrong information, but those links led me to the proper quotes I just shared here. Now, though, both those links from 375 are leading to some variation of "Page is gone."

I just checked my profile, and one of the quotes requested for deletion in post 375 has now been removed, but the other,

"It's time to make important noise" (https://www.goodreads.com/quotes/8333...)

is still there. Is it possible that another librarian may have handled this for me?

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2278 comments We may be talking at cross purposes here, Erica.

The one I am asking rivka about is from post #346 & it is number 7. There is another one like that, but rivka only needs to see one example.

On #375 both quotes are coming up as page not found for me. Can another librarian check? I'm afraid I don't remember what either quote said.

I'll just wait a bit for another librarian to check, then I'll delete the one in #381.

I stopped helping on another thread because I was getting page not found when the requester could still see it, so it is possible I have some weird sort of GR bug.

message 377: by lethe (new)

lethe | 16359 comments Both links in #375 are for the same quote (7755800 - be open to inspiration...), and it has been deleted, hence the 'page not found'.

I have now deleted the quote in #381 (important noise) and get a 'page not found' for that as well.

With the relevant quotes deleted, it's hard for me to be clear on what was asked. If it was regarding a fragment or similar invalid quote, those can be deleted even if they have likes.

message 381: by Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ (last edited Dec 21, 2021 05:17PM) (new)

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2278 comments Oh sorry - two of them had a like but I couldn't see the name of the person who liked it. I was told that happens when the author likes their own quote. I left a few days in case it was caching.

#354 hasn't been done as I was wondering if the author should be anonymous.

message 382: by rivka, Former Moderator (last edited Dec 21, 2021 10:24PM) (new)

rivka | 45177 comments Mod
If they are otherwise valid quotes, I would lean towards keeping them even for a single like, and even if you cannot tell whose like it is. (Sometimes likes from the user who added the quote to the database behave in the way you describe. So not necessarily the author of the quote; the person who added it. Who may also be the author.) If they are fragments or otherwise invalid, I would delete even if they have many likes.

Unsourced folk quotes like #354's do not meet our criteria for notability.

Carol She's So Novel꧁꧂ | 2278 comments #354 both deleted. Thanks rivka & sorry for my error with the other two.

@ Clare I have started working through the other Black Beauty quotes, but will leave the fragments until after Christmas. 🤶

Not sure what is going on here but the same person seems to be placing chunks several paragraphs long from this author's books as quotes. They all have a hanging word at the end. Looks like someone just pasted an entire Kindle page. The author may not even like this, as it provides an entire chapter if you read a few.
