SOLVED. YA Fantasy about a power struggle set in some kind of dream-scape where people control the environment around them with thoughts or dreams. [s]

I read this book around 2003. I received a box of books without any covers from a bookseller and consequently cannot remember any of the names or authors of these books. This one has been hardest to find. The main character is male. I'm not sure he is necessarily a teen, but the book is definitely for young adults. It's set in a strange world where there are different people struggling for power who control their own self-created realms in this dream-scape, that if I remember correctly was controlled by thoughts or imagination. The main character has to travel between some of these realms on some kind of quest and I remember something about characters learning to fly and a final fight/war scene involving a chess board. Vague and strange, but please help!
