I read Word to the Wise earlier this month. Jenn McKinlay did a really good job with a serious and sensitive subject plus a really good mystery.

It's taking me longer to complete this challenge because I've been reading a lot of historical mysteries (set in 1800s). Many of the books for these tasks need to be fairly contemporary.

Same here. I am trying to alternate between modern and historical. I subscribed to Kindle Unlimited when the library was closed in the spring so that helped!

Congrats! Lately I've been finding historical fiction and fantasy more interesting. Maybe escape from current times. Signing up for KU was one of the first things I did when I got my Kindle.

INVENTIONS AND INNOVATIONS:
Zipper - Several inventors contributed to the mechanical device we know as the zipper. First used as a shoe closure, it was the magazine and fashion industry that popularized this device for clothing.

Escalator - This moving staircase transports people between floors of a building using a conveyor belt type device. It had its start as a novelty ride at Coney Island amusement park.

Chocolate Chip Cookies- In 1930 Ruth Wakefield, a baker at the Toll House Inn in Massachusetts, added pieces of chocolate to a batch of cookie dough and invented the chocolate chip cookie.
