SOLVED. Science Fiction SF book about hole created by mistake in laboratory. [s]

Looking for the title of a book I read probably 10-20 years ago. Guessing the book was from 80's. I don't recall the plot but the book started out in a laboratory. There was some sort of accident and I thought some radiation(or maybe it was a black hole) was unleashed and created a tiny hole in the wall of the laboratory. The Scientists saw this but didn't realize that as the beam traveled it grew in radius. And I think the plot was a some distance away perhaps a person was transformed/killed?

I thought it was a novel but maybe it was a short story written by Asimov.
