Hi, guys, I had the pleasure of reading City of Masks and can say without hesitation that it's worth the read. I really enjoyed it, and I wouldn't say that just because Ashley and I are digital friends...I'd say nothing at all if I didn't really, really like it.
If you like fantasy, it's a great story.

Forsakenby J.D. Barker

“Incredibly written, supremely creepy. I don’t say this lightly: J.D. Barker is a force to be reckoned with.”

"A talented writer with a delightfully devious mind!"

#1 International Bestselling Author

Book One of the Shadow Cove Saga

Inspired by Actual Events
Excerpt from the Journal of Clayton Stone – 1692 She was examined today without torture at Shadow Cove township on the charge of witchcraft. She said she was wholly innocent of the crime and has never in life renounced God. I watched as they brought her out. A poor, sickly thing, worn by her time behind the walls of her prison. Her bared feet and hands bound in leather, her clothing tattered to that of ruin. Despite such condition, her head was held high, her eyes meeting those of her accusers. She still refuses to provide her name so we remain unable to search baptismal records, nor has her family stepped forward to claim her as their own. We have no reason to believe she is anything but an orphaned child. I find myself unable to look at her directly in the moments preceding her trial. She is watching me though; with eyes of the deepest blue, she is watching me.
Thad McAlister, Rise of the Witch

When horror author Thad McAlister began his latest novel, a tale rooted in the witch trials of centuries past, the words flowed effortlessly. The story poured forth, filling page after page with the most frightening character ever to crawl from his imagination. It was his greatest work, one that would guarantee him a position among the legends of the craft.

But was it really fiction?

He inadvertently opened a door, one that would soon jeopardize the lives of his family.

She wants to come back.

At home, his wife struggles to keep their family alive. Secretly wondering if she caused it all…a deal she made long ago. A deal with the Forsaken.

Magic-Price (The Crown of Stones, #1) by C.L. Schneider Magic-Scars (The Crown of Stones, #2) by C.L. Schneider

C.L. Schneider has just released book #2 Magic-Scars of her Crown of Stones trilogy in paperback (soon to release on Kindle). Book #1, Magic-Price, is beautifully written with a great story backed by great quality. If you enjoy the fantasy novel of epic proportions, I strongly recommend Crown of Stones.

Thanks! You too :D

Ok, got another recommendation for the thread - it's one I've made in other places I think, but I love the book so I always end up recommending it no matter where I am :D

The Wind Up Bird Chronicle by Haruki Murakami - easily my fav surrealist/magical-realism writer, and one of his best works, I reckon.

Although, his 'wild sheep chase' is a little shorter and is probably a nice intro to his style too :)

Amber Martingale That's from his traditional swords-and-sorcery style fantasy series, the Codex Alera. If you want to explore his earlier urban fantasy series, The Dresden Files, start with the short story "Restoration of Faith": https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

Ace, I just read it, maybe I'll start withe Dresden Files instead :D
Thanks, Amber!

Timothy Bateson (timothybateson) | 23 comments If you start on the Dresden Files, just be prepared to build up a backlog on your reading list. At least the Codex comes to a definite end.

Thanks, Tim - right you are, just had a look, 15 books so far! I'll start slow then :D

Have you read them all?

message 22: by Timothy (new)

Timothy Bateson (timothybateson) | 23 comments I'm up to date on both sets. My personal opinion is that the Dresden Files is a bit of a mixed bag in terms of quality. Some books take longer to develop, but the pay offs are worth it. The Codex series builds throughout the entire series, and is a little more consistent in terms of quality.

message 23: by Ashley (new)

Ashley Capes | 42 comments Excellent, thank you! I'll start with Dresden and when it need a break I can switch to the Codex, thanks!

The Dresden Files will too...on the 23rd book.

Ashley: Yes and reread at least once...except for GHOST STORY. It's too damned slow in pace, compared to the books that come before AND after, especially SKIN GAME.

Last Light Falling (The Covenant, #1) by J.E. Plemons

Dissonant (The Eyes of The Sun Prequel) by Christina McMullen Although vampire stories are not my usual read, I found Dissonant to be unique and very well written. Christina McMullen is without doubt an accomplished author, writing at a professional level, and turning out stories that keep you reading and looking forward to the next one. Dissonant is a shortish novel, or longish novelette, that begins the "Eyes Of The Sun" series. A complete story on its own, it nevertheless provides a compelling hook leading into the next book in the series. This is the second book I've read by Christina McMullen, the other being a light-hearted and entertaining zombie story titled Going Green and in both I found her writing to be fresh and entertaining. I rate this one at 4 1/2 out of 5 stars, rounding up to 5.

Quoleena Sbrocca (qjsbrocca) Here's one that I read a couple months ago. It's the first of a serial novel.

Turn 1 The Kind of Place This Is (Devil's Playground) by Dax Christopher

Here's one paragraph from my review:
The writing is so descriptive that I could picture the small town that the main character, Amy, found herself in. The writing style melded with the world that the author painted, and I could sense the sultry/lusty/gritty air on every page. There's a description of a black silk dress that was so exquisitely done that I could see the woman moving across the floor. I love it when writing is so thick and rich that I can sink my eyes into it for a long, savory bite.

I can't believe I'm the only one who's left a review of this one so far.

Michael Lewis (mll1013) | 6 comments The Crossing Hour (The Crossing Hour, #1) by Quoleena Sbrocca I recently read The Crossing Hour. I love sci-fi and historical fiction, so I found this blending of two genres fascinating. For a debut novel, the quality of the writing and editing is impressive.
