Maggie Hammes | 5 comments Hello! The book is about an old man that has a huge garden with a pear tree. Kids come by and he shares the pears with them on their way to school. After some time he passes away and the property goes to his nephew who is very selfish and builds a wall about the garden. However, the old man had one wish and that was to be buried in a pine box with a pear in his hand. The cemetery is down the road and it grows into a big pear tree that the children enjoy. My mom loved this book and we have looked everywhere for it. We got it at the library about 20 years ago (but the book might be much older) as kids but were never able to find it back again. My mom think the main character's name was Web Nebick (or something like that) this book might also not originally be from the US. I hope I can find some answers here! :)

Did you move this to Possibly Solved? So you're pretty sure that's the book?

The Amazon UK synopsis of "The Enchanted Pear Tree" is "A children's story about a dead tree magically transformed into a pear tree," which doesn't really sound like the book you're looking for.

Nóinín (fagurfifill) | 168 comments Maggie, your story is strongly reminiscent of the German legend about Hans-Georg von Ribbeck, which was made into a ballad by Theodor Fontane: Herr von Ribbeck auf Ribbeck im Havelland
I have found several illustrated children's books in German language, which may have translated versions, e.g. this one: Sir Ribbeck Of Ribbeck Of Havelland

It's available at the Internet Archive. You need to be a member to "take out" books, but membership is free; you only need to give them an e-mail address.
