YA book about a young woman who hooks up with a guy who turns out to be underage. Meanwhile, she had possibly witnessed someone dying in a lake/falling through the ice in their wintery town. Read around 2007.

Been trying to find this book for years! The protagonist is a young woman (early 20s), and she meets a flirty guy at a bookstore. They hook up, and then she finds out he is underage, so they part ways. There's an ongoing mystery in the book about a death (of a young girl?) in a lake, that the protagonist may have witnessed. She and the guy end up reconnecting when he gets older. Her and the guy are white; I believe the author was a white woman. It's set in a midwestern or northeastern town (my brain's saying Michigan or Wisconsin but not sure). I read it sometime between 2005-2009.

The death may also have been a car accident? It's hazy. I remember the winter aspect, someone sitting on a bench outside (maybe the protagonist who witnessed the death, or maybe the person who died?), and possibly a lake.
