I prefer no music or TV when reading. just pure silence. I find I can lose myself easier. although last week I managed it with the prodigy playing....that was kind of weird/ different

if you want to listen to music, add spotify to your computer it's free, and can listen to loads of music.

Load on your computer, it's free, don't pay to up grade.
Then when you open it will list new music, go to search it will bring up ALL their albums and singles and you can play and listen.
Because it's free sometimes it had adverts, but a good way to see if you like some music.
You can drag some and make your own playlists, but cannot move to I tunes, and not paid for, but listen to anything.
Plus it will lists music it thinks you will like.
I have a peaceful piano playlist that I listen to on Spotify. I swear every song hits the right mood at the right time no matter what I'm reading.

I prefer to read in silence. Although when I'm watching a show that is not on my DVR(When I actually have to wait for commercials) then I will read during commercials.

Life is too short, for rubbish commercials !
I'm a musician - I can't even have music on when I'm driving, let alone when I'm reading. I'd be so focused on the song, I would be a risk to everyone on the road! Also, I'm a man, so can't multi-task. Tragic, isn't it :-(

I love to listen to Coffee House or CBC Adult Pop while I read. I have music on all the time at my house, work, in the car.
If I listen to music when I read, it's either KSHE or KLOU ( http://www.kshe95.com/ or http://www.klou.com/main.html ) since those are the only 2 music stations in the St. Louis, MO. area that my radio can pick up with any decent reception.

James, I'm female and not a musician and I'm the same way. Music is too absorbing. I can't let it be background.
I enjoy listening to Classical, Film Scores, or New Age when reading.
The stations I have mentioned before are classic Hard Rock/Metal (KSHE) and 60's/70's (KLOU). I used to listen to 99.1 KFUO FM before they changed formats and call sign (Classical to KJOY (contemporary "Christian") ).
It's opera for me while I'm reading.

Music when reading? Occasionally. Depends on the composer. I've got a varied playlist on my tablet. This month, it's David Bowie's "The Man Who Sold The World" from the smash hit military/science fiction video game Metal Gear Solid V, along with several items from the OST itself which I was listening to when reading a book I just reviewed today.
The other thing I listened to last month was the soundtrack from Person Of Interest Season 2, while re-reading this book. 
I'm a big film and tv score geek. I listen to just about most types of music except rap and hard rock. Ok one can perhaps argue that Trouble from The Music Man is a rap song. I can listen to music or have the TV on when I read sometimes its on sometimes not.Give me a score by Steiner, Korngold, any of the Newmans (Alfred, Lionel, Thomas, David), Waxman, Herrmann, Goldsmith, Bernstein (Elmer and Leonard both), Williams, Elfman, LoDucca or Tiomkin and a good book and the outside world vanishes for a time.

i can listen to music while reading but it's got to be just softly playing in the background and it cannot be radio because talking is a distraction. also, it can't be "catchy" music that i would be tempted to sing along with - so i would probably go with classical or something light and ethereal. i have a lot of conditions but when all the musical stars align, it brings my reading hours to a much higher level.
I agree about talking, which is why I listen to public radio or stream BBC Radio 3.
Kirsten: Yeah, it's not. If I want to hear something other than NPR, I'll retune my radio to either KSHE, KBDZ or KLOU (St. Louis area stations. KSHE is hard rock/metal, KBDZ is Classic rock and KSHE is 70's/80's. BTW, you KNOW you're getting old when the Guns N' Roses cover version of Live and Let Die by Paul McCartney and Wings is considered "classic rock.")pics: I'm not quite THAT picky! LOL.

Not easy to be me, either, pics. The stations I mentioned are the only three other than the local NPR affiliate that my radio can pick up with any decent reception.
I am a HUGE music fan. Years ago I would put on some "mellow" music and read but now I want silence. I get too distracted. At any other time (working, cleaning, driving, walking, etc) I have to have it:)

I now have the cd version housed in my Sony 200 cd changer. As much as I like Rosenman's music, and I have several soundtrack/score cds by him, sometimes it reminds me a bit much of his scores for the TV show Combat. Same is true for his score to Star Trek IV. At this point I prefer Howard Shore's scores for the 3 LOTR movies.

Silence. I love to loll about in my fantasy world and my left/right brain won't agree what to concentrate on if I also have music playing.

Depends on the moment or day for me. Sometimes I cannot do it.
I prefer to listen to music when I'm writing a novel, than to listen when reading.For my fast-moving/dramatic scenes, I listen to songs such as: 'I Drove All Night' (Roy Orbison), 'The Crying Game' (Boy George), and 'Drive' (Cars).
