Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Sooooo funny. I was just going to ask this question, as I just finished As You Wish Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes . I was thinking Blue Collar didn't quite fit. So, yes, I'd go with White Collar.

I read an article about the definition of white collar and blue collar and it said entertainers where considered blue collar.

White collar was defined as occupations in an office environment or for professionals such as doctors, lawyers, accountants, and maybe architects.

I guess if you are a professional actor as opposed to a struggling actor you could be considered white collared?

I have a book coming up in February and the hero is a professional painter.

I was going to classify him as blue collar because he was not an office job, but now I am rethinking it because he is a professional.

In any case my first choice will be to classify him as blue collar because his job involves manual labor and it is not an office job. If he was an Art gallery owner, then I would consider white collar.

For now I am classifying all my actors and artists as blue collar; but that's just me, I guess it could go both ways

R.C. Matthews (rcmatthews) | 271 comments Not sure if this helps:

The terms "blue collar" and "white collar" are occupational classifications that distinguish workers who perform manual labor from workers who perform professional jobs. Historically, blue-collar workers wore uniforms, usually blue, and worked in trade occupations. White-collar workers typically wore white, button down shirts. and worked in office settings. Other aspects that distinguish blue-collar and white-collar workers include earnings and education level.

Blue Collar
Blue-collar workers perform labor jobs and typically work with their hands. The skills necessary for blue-collar work vary by occupation. Some blue-collar occupations require highly skilled personnel who are formally trained and certified. These workers include aircraft mechanics, plumbers, electricians and structural workers. Many blue-collar employers hire unskilled and low-skilled workers to perform simple tasks such as cleaning, maintenance and assembly line work.

White Collar
White-collar workers usually perform job duties in an office setting. They are highly skilled and formally trained professionals. Many white-collar workers, such as accountants, bankers, attorneys and real estate agents, provide professional services to clients. Other white-collar workers, such as engineers and architects, provide services to businesses, corporations and government agencies.

Sunny☼ (sunny2) | 643 comments Question Lisa Kay..

I was thinking for the poll to work, we can't determine how many we are going to read...right? Or we would be fixing the poll...ie. 10 white, 10 blue. tie and done...

We would have to instead set a date and on that date see who was winning..

So I am leaving my count open and just upping it on my homepage if I need to.

That's fine, Sunny☼. Whatever you want to do. We'll go by the actual total read at the end of each month, not the goal.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Yeah, "actor" really is a "no collar" type of job, so it makes it so hard to put into "white" or "blue." So you'll have to go with you gut on this one. However, if they have a Masters in Drama from Yale, as some do, or some such thing, then I'd say they were "white" collar.

Maybe we should add a third category for Artists and Actors and undercover agents?

You are miles ahead of me...just finally figuring it all out.. Genius Lisa Kay. Truly. I went to the tracking page where we can see community entries. The pieces then all fell into place. Cool!

Ipshita (miss_romanceaholic) | 1031 comments In the book Poison Study, the hero is an assassin as well as an adviser. Will he be a "white" collar or "blue" collar?

And, what about Raphael from Archangel's Consort? I'm guessing he'll be a "blue" collar but I'm not so sure.

message 131: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments I would say Poison Study is "blue" collar, and Archangel's Consort (since he is the boss) is "white" collar.

Thoughts from anyone else?

I would put Raphael as white collar too - he is certainly the "big Boss"

Kritika | 497 comments What about Rafe Brandon from Say Yes to the Marquess?
He is a marquess's son and younger brother but he has shunned society. He is a boxer/prizefighter and he does not even live in splendor. So blue collar or white?

message 140: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Whoa, Kritika. That's a tough one. I think you could go either way on that one. Your decision. Unless anyone else wants to weigh in.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 13013 comments I haven't read that one yet (It's in my next up reads) but as you have described him I'd go with Blue Collar - as a boxer certainly works with his hands and if that's the persona he is for most of the book.

Lisa - (Aussie Girl) | 13013 comments Here's another one for you gals to ponder over.

I'm re- reading Wuthering Heights (probably my favourite book ever.. although a few of you don't like it, I know) anyway what category would Heathcliff (the original bad boy) belong to?

He starts off blue collar but rises to white collar. But I think in his tortured heart he will always be blue collar. Thoughts?

message 146: by Lisa Kay, Tinker Bell (new)

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 21897 comments Another one that is up to you, Lisa. Or maybe consider what percent of the time he spends in the book as which one.

Is that sentence grammatically correct? LOL!

message 149: by Stories (new)

Stories & Verse (storiesverse) | 256 comments My blue collar and white collar shelves are now tied at 2 to 2 after I added Something Great to white collar. I gave this story 3 stars. The hero is the CEO of an advertising firm.

This is going to be an interesting challenge. At first I thought I would have more white collar, but after reading the definition of blue collar, things could go either way.
