Find Regency romance read from 1980 - 1999

Hi. I am looking for a Regency romance where the hero is trying to find a girl to marry with the help of his friend due to being refused by the incomparable woman he thought he was in love with which makes him very angry. I only remember that his plans go awry and he gets madder and madder and says things which are quite funny. His attitude to the girl who is in love with him changes. He changes. I do not remember who wrote it or the title which was something like: The Mad Marquess or The Savage Lord something, but it was well written. It would have to be one of the older writers like Marion Chesney or Clare Darcy but I have checked them and cannot find it. . Can anyone help?
