Jessica (jollybookshelf) Taylor is starting the series now!

Adriana Pereira (adrianacecilia) I've read the first one already and then started this one, got about halfway and...it's been sitting on my desk for about...a year? Sometimes (most times) I think I'm a super reader and begin reading four books at the same which results in leaving the longest behind. But I haven't give up on it yet and plan to read the whole series! Even if it takes decades.

I've started reading the books because of the TV show as well, can't wait for next season!

message 3: by Tara (new)

Tara Ferguson (TaraSummar) I read the entire A Song of Ice and Fire series. I loved each and every book. Other than the first book in the series, "A Game of Thrones," "Clash of Kings" is my favorite.

This one is my "2015 resolution"! I started it something like 2 years ago, so I decided I have to finish it this year. It will be a convenient book for the 500pages and help me complete my resolution!

Peter Great series. When I read this book, I realized that basically the entirety of "Game of Thrones" was just an introduction and the story really takes off here. Compared to the first book, this book is massive in scope. It expands on the number of characters involved and the complexity of the politics/alliances and disputes increases.

If you've seen the tv series, the books have a fair number of differences, but the best is that you get more detail into the motivations and thoughts of the characters, especially the POV ones.

Taylor (amateursuperhero) | 66 comments As Jessica said, I started reading the first book this past week. I've watched the show religiously and I own all of the books but just never got around to actually reading them. I hope you enjoy A Clash of Clings and maybe I can catch up to you at some point!

Pauline | 4 comments I'm also reading this book for week one, but the german edition ("Die Saat des goldenen Löwen") which has 670 pages. :)
I loved the first book, and I'm really exited for this one!

Haha it's funny to see how some of you are excited about the book. I succeeded to read 10pages in 2 days. I think I'll finish the book in time for the "book you never finished" week :D (I'm at 700p, so 300p to go...)
I'm really not in the war stuff so it's not a good book for me, the previous one was easier to read. I already skipped many pages in this one :(

Pedro Figueiredo (pedroaugustofigueiredo) Well, it's a great book. It has a slow-pace but in the end you will want to read Storm of Swords like, immediately.

message 10: by Cait (new) - rated it 4 stars

Cait (clickcait) | 480 comments I agree with what was said upthread, the first one in the series is just sort of setting everything up and this is the one where all the action starts.

It took me around a year to read all the published books because I was reading them inbetween other books (and series). I think I needed a challenge like this one to help me get through them quicker. ;-)

Peter As far as action goes, the first book is great because it's on a much smaller scale than the rest so there are fewer characters and it feels like things move along faster. The second book definitely picks up the pace and scale and the third book, although a little slower and a longer read, still has a lot of action and some really great (and gut-wrenching) twists and turns. I found the 4th and 5th books to be good, but slower paced. I think mainly because they occur concurrently instead of consecutively like the others, and not all of the characters are in both.

I've the books 3 & 4 but I don't think I'll read them this year (Peter just discouraged me more with his "slower and longer", I've enough of that with the 2nd :p).

I finished 2 chapters, next one is about Jon, one of my 3 favorite characters, so it will help a little.
I like Jon for the danger and the fantasy, Arya for the adventure and the revenge, and Tyrion for the humor and cleverness.

Who are your favorite characters? :)

message 13: by KP (new) - rated it 4 stars

KP | 13 comments When it comes to characters in a book, wit and humor really sell me on choosing them as my favorite character. That being said: I'm a big Tyrion fan. Also Asha Greyjoy.

Peter I didn't mean to discourage anyone, sorry! They are still a good read, and there is lots of action.

Part of the reason I got bogged down in book 4 is because I read the first 4 books back to back. By the time I got to book 4, I needed a break, and the writing style shifts slightly in book 4; rather than split book 4 and 5 by time, they take place at the same time and cover characters in different geographic regions, so some of my favourite characters were mostly absent from book 4.

As far as action goes, I think book 3 has got to have some of the best (and most surprising) action scenes in the series so far.

As far as my favourite characters gp: Tyrion, Jon and Arya are top, but I have also come to like Jaime Lannister, and also Barristan Selmy.

Don't worry, I started this book 2 years ago, so it tells all about how I want to read the next ones ;)

I saw the 1st season of the tv show before starting the books, I think it adds a lot to why I like Tyrion.
Asha has a great personality in this book :)

Shirley (godalminggirl) | 3 comments I am also reading this for my week 1 challenge! I read the 1st book in the series about nine months ago and have probably forgotten most of the characters and what happened lol.
I am not sure that I would have chosen to go back to the series except my two sons are nagging me to do so. They have read the series and loved it. They are 21 and 24. So, on the basis that I chose so many of their books as they were growing up, I reckon I should let them choose at least a few for me!
I am very excited about this reading challenge and really pleased to join the group!!

How is the book for those who didn't started it before last year? :)

After a nice journey on the snow, more interesting than expected, I've just returned to the south for a Sansa chapter. I'm a little afraid, I'm pretty sure Joffrey will be around and as I can't punch him in the face, it won't make the chapter better.

Taylor (amateursuperhero) | 66 comments I just finished book 1 and I'm thinking about powering through this book throughout the next week. I loved A Game of Thrones and I'm not sure if I can wait until midway through the challenge to pick the series back up!

Milena I skipped a lot when it was Catelyn chapters, I don't know if it will become better for you later, but for me it was the same for her all the time, except near the end.
