Welcome to "Read to Win the War," a book club for readers of World War II history, brought to you by The National WWII Museum in New Orleans.

Books are selected and discussed by the Museum's historians and curators. Each book will be read over two weeks, featuring two live or recorded webinar discussions, with authors participating when possible. Ongoing discussion boards will be moderated here on our Goodreads page.

Wesley will be moderating the discussion boards, and Ed will be moderating the live and recorded events.

If you are a new member to the group, please introduce yourself in this thread. Then check the discussion boards for information, schedules, and conversation on our next book. Happy reading!

Edward Lengel (edwardlengel) Greetings, everyone! I'm Ed Lengel, Senior Director of Programs at the National WWII Museum. As my Goodreads page indicates, I'm a fanatical reader and also a prolific writer. Although WWI has long been my primary field, I enjoy WWII and other military history as well. One of the great things about this group is that each book we read, beginning with Neal Bascomb's fantastic book Faster, will include LIVE author participation--from questions submitted by the author, to participation in webinars where they will take your questions and comments in real time. Looking forward to this!

Thanks Ed! I'm also excited for the live, interactive author events.
Glad to have you moderating them with your knowledge and expertise!

Hi all! I'm Wesley Lucas, Librarian at the National WWII Museum. I enjoy reading military history, fiction, poetry, and comics/graphic novels. I will be moderating the discussion boards where we will post info on the current book and author, provide discussion questions, and of course chat books. Looking forward to reading and learning with y'all!

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi folks, Ed mentioned this group to me and it sounds very interesting. I love reading military history, especially WW2 although I'm afraid I don't read many novels at the moment, more non-fiction. I am also a moderator at the Goodreads World War Two Group and I will post details about this new group on our news thread so other WW2 group members can check out the activities and events you may host.

Many thanks, Rick. You are a true connoisseur of military history and I have enjoyed following your reviews here for many years. I really appreciate your sharing information about this on your group. We are sticking to nonfiction here as well.

Hi Neal! So glad to have you in the group and can't wait to hear more about your book!

Mike Cunha | 1 comments Hi Folks,

Many thanks to Dr. Lengel for inviting me to this group. I produce the Battles of the First World War Podcast, so my nose is usually buried in non-fiction related to WW1. I grew up reading lots of WW2 book, though.

Janice (lillyzackmom) | 4 comments Hi! My name is Janice. I live in the DC suburbs and have always been fascinated by WWII and, as a Jew, feel a personal connection to it. I love reading and go mainly between biographies, historical (fiction and non), and truly whatever jumps out at me and sounds interesting. I'm hoping this discussion isn't too academic for me. .. there are a lot of experts in the room already! I've never done an online bookclub but this sounds fun! I love visiting your museum when in NOLA, and the best part BY FAR is getting to chat with the vets. Thanks for all you do!

Tamara | 1 comments Hello, I was invited by Janice, and this will also be my first online book club. WWII history is my favorite era, and when I'm not reading, I teach World and U.S. History at the high school level.

'Aussie Rick' (aussierick) Hi Janice and Tamara and welcome to the group.

message 14: by Barbara (new)

Barbara | 2 comments Hi all

I'm a professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Collat School of Business. One of my areas is human resource management. As a former HR manager, I have been interested in the use of forced and slave labor by companies during WWII. My father was a WWII vet and spent the war in the Pacific Theater as a Seabee. Looking forward to participating in this group!

Rebekah Pierce | 3 comments Hi there! My name is Rebekah, and I am a recent grad of the MS WWII Studies program at ASU! The resources and time shared by the incredible staff at the National WWII Museum in New Orleans were incredibly helpful and generous in pursuing my degree. I went to my neighborhood book club for the first time in three years last night, prepared with my best "civilian" WWII reads to suggest for the upcoming year, and quickly realized that my interest is no longer casual. I do love WWII historical fiction: I always have. Genocide, however, is not a great conversation on a Thursday night before cupcakes and Diet Coke! I'm looking forward to this group's reading suggestions and discussions (without assigned and graded questions.) Cheers!

Kathryne (kathrynews) | 1 comments I have a book club and they are sick of my historical fiction picks. I would love to pick a group read.My main interest is the Holocaust because I had the honor of working with survivors. My Dad was a World War II veteran who did not talk about the war at all.

Hey everyone, this is Wes from the WWII Museum library. I appreciate your recent comments, I'm glad to see you're interested in the book club! We plan to eventually relaunch in some capacity, so stay tuned. Thanks!

@Kathryne

A large part of my Capstone project was on the Holocaust, its legacy and effect on genocides since the war, and present-day Holocaust denial in America.

Although much of that is non-fiction, I LOVE historical fiction about the war, and the Holocaust is one of my favorite sub-genres. Although sometimes hard to read, the stories can be very life-affirming and definitely frame life since the war in a way that makes subsequent generations grateful for the sacrifice that occurred.

I would love to connect and discuss books. May I add you as a friend on my personal feed?

June Triana-Schiada | 1 comments Powerless in Poland: Growing up under the Nazi Regime June Triana-Schiada
Hello everyone, My name is June and I am an Indie Writer following a dream. Things just sort of fell into place after I semi-retired and I'm thrilled to enter into my "Omega Journey." I write for middle grade readers and started out with a cute little series but stumbled into historical fiction when I asked my 95 year-old-Uncle about his life during World War 2. I got hooked on the research process. My next book will be about the Latvian Refugees Post WW2 (my Aunt's story) Even though my genre is middle grade, the book is compelling enough for us adults too! Thanks you!

Bart Stark | 1 comments Anyone in the mood to read and review a WWII alternative history novel? Thanks!

Lieutenant Jim Fraser was in turns eager and terrified. His Bravo Company led the American offensive to liberate Charleston, but would his wife Florrie and their twin girls trapped behind German lines survive the coming battle?

Consider another Second World War. Due to a twist of history during his youth, Adolph Hitler turns west and out to sea against England and America in alliance with fascist Japan and Italy. After the British Empire falls, the Axis turn on an outnumbered and unprepared United States. Instead of being waged in far off lands, total war rages across the Hawaiian Islands and South Carolina, down our streets and into the homes of our families.

Wolves at the Gate by Bart Stark

Wolves at the Gate is the first of a series of alternative history novels telling the story of that war, styled as Robert Conroy’s 1942 meets Charles Frazier’s Cold Mountain, with the epic multiple perspectives of Ken Follett's Pillars of the Earth. The novel differs from most other WWII fiction in its focus on the overlooked ordinary people on both sides caught up in the horrific battles antiseptically portrayed in history books.
