I think he knew of Sebastian's reputation and trusted him. Since he freely stepped forward with information, I wasn't too suspicious of him.
I couldn’t understand why he came forward until later in the story when I realized it was out of guilt. Initially, though, I thought he might be trying to point the finger at someone else to protect himself, not from Nicholas’ murder but something from the past.
I kept waiting for him to be found dead before Sebastian had a chance to talk to him. You know how his luck runs sometimes.
