Speaking from experience, investing in a dehumidifier and a couple good heat lamps is worth it.
Tassie Dave wrote: "Basements seem to be an American thing. As is flooding them ;-)"We have tornadoes.
I am in the Tennessee Valley. We get floods, tornados and bears. I am 3/4ths of the way through the book and I adore it. As I wait for the basement to dry I am pleased to have the company of a good book.
Tassie Dave wrote: "If I lived in tornado alley I'd have the deepest, strongest cellar money could buy."So would I, and I'm not sure I'd ever leave it.
I have never lived anywhere near Tornado Alley, but I’ve seen three tornadoes without even trying. One from my backyard. Last year tornadoes hit the neighborhood and shopping center a mile from my parents’ house. They still lost a full-grown mature tree in the storm. So yeah, basements are gear.
I don't live near Tornado Alley but I miss having a basement. My house doesn't have one and ever since being in a tornado ("They never hit here, I'll be fine!") I now freak out and go to basically my first floor closet with my cat. It's a very small space...

THAT IS SO WRONG.
...okay, the Mars landing was faked (Capricorn One) but everyone knows Stanley Kubrick insisted on filming the Moon landing on location.
Tassie Dave wrote: "Basements seem to be an American thing. As is flooding them ;-)"As a European, I always thought basements were a very Unamerican thing, but YMMV.
My observation was based on TV and Movies, which here is mostly US, British and Australian.
So very 'scientific' ;-) and subject to confirmation bias.
Basements are rare in Oz

If Kansas had more basements back in the day, Dorothy wouldn’t have ended up in Oz.
I feel the need to point out the house had a basement, Dorothy just couldn't get to it.In the clip at about the 1:50 and 2:15 marks.

Do you want the jokes fast or accurate? :p
Although if you really want to get technical, that wasn’t a basement but actually a storm cellar.
Although, I suppose the "storm cellar" thing is technically correct. And we all know what that kind of correct is, right? I DON'T HEAR YOU!!!
My grandma’s house in Indiana had a storm cellar, which is an underground shelter away from the house and barn. A basement is an underground story of a building.

Good for extreme sheltering at home during time wars and pandemics

I have to say that this book is what I needed. There is a poetry to each section. I am only 23% into it but every description has delighted me and the clear love they have for format left me in a much better place. I love a bit of poetry in my prose. Probably why also love Gaiman. I found myself going back to reread paragraphs and openings. I can't wait to finish.
