Fiction about time & communication. Man wonders if someone in another planet sent a message (twinkle of a star?)

Many years ago, I started reading a book (fiction), but lost it after I had only read a few pages. for some reason, I thought it was by Italo Calvino, but i cannot find such book among his.
I vaguely remember it started with a man, being triggered by a twinkle of star( I think), asking himself, what if someone in another planet sent a message ? if so the message should have been sent 5 billion years ago, so we can see it now...
I didn't read any further, but I guesses it was on the subject of time, and communication.... unfortunately, with neither the book title, nor the author's name, I cannot find the book, which I am really keen to read..
can anybody help me, please?

Next to the word "Fiction" put the sentence about the man that you put in the post.
