I have not been able to concentrate at all the past three weeks. My reading has gone to crap. My favorite Belgian author of all time, Stefan Hertmans, has solved this. He wrote a book which I consider one of the best of the last decade, War And Turpentine, which is part memoir and part novel. It is an amazing historical reconstruction of the wars of the 20th century in Europe and how they affected Hertmans personally. If you need a book to read right now though, make it War and Turpentine. But his new book, The Convert, is awe-inspiring. It's a dark Romeo and Juliet story of doomed love played out against a backdrop of 11th-century European crusades. Hertmans layers his retracing of the journey throughout the narrative in modern-day Europe and Africa. It is a story of history, of geography, of love, told by a master of description and human emotion. And even if you are in quarantine, it will allow your heart and mind to soar through time and space. Stefan Hertmans, you genius, the Kevin De Bruyne of writing, I am so grateful to you.
