SOLVED. YA book, post apocalypse, boy with old man in movie theater. [s]

I'm trying to track down a series of books I read in the early 90s in the UK. My memory of it is poor, but with the help of a friend (who read it in the US) I've managed to get a basic plot outline. This is what we THINK we remember. Nothing is set in stone and these details may or may not be right.

A boy works in a movie theatre with an old man who owns the place. Some kind of end-of-days event happens (possibly nuclear war). They lock themselves in the basement of the cinema and survive on movie snacks. The old man (possibly) dies. There are packs of dogs roaming around - or some kind of threat. Eventually, after a few years, the boy must leave and embarks on an adventure - meeting a girl that he may or may not be romantically involved with. It was a series of books, but its anybody's guess how many, when they were published or the name of the author.

It's hazy at best - but that's what we've got to go on at the moment. If this jogs any memories, please let me know - I've been trying to figure this out for a while.
