SOLVED. Dystopian/Post Apocalypse Possible young reader? [s]

I’d say I read this book in the 90s. It was a post apocalyptic type book where people had a choice to upload their conscious into something they called the Bin? People in the outside world could visit the bin but they got very sick from being in there too long. There was some form of shadyness going on but I can’t remember what. Pretty sure the man character was a guy who visited his parents in the Bin.
