Jessica (jollybookshelf) You know the drill... you make a resolution to eat healthier, be richer, and get skinnier, but it never works out the way you plan.

So... what's your resolution?

As I blissfully chomp away at potato chips at 1:30 AM, I think of how I make that "eat healthier" resolution every year and how I'll probably make it again this year. This year I think I'll just resolve to make smarter choices when/where I can instead of going all Nazi on my eating habits like I have in years past. Apparently I don't respect my authority.

Maybe I'll resolve to eat at home more often since I'm finding I actually sort of enjoy cooking. How about you, Jessica? Any resolutions?

message 3: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Well I'm currently eating Rice Crispies (but it's only 12:30am so I don't feel as bad ;)) I may have to agree with you. Obviously reading 52 books in a year is already one resolution. I never really make resolutions... more of just goals.

-Read more
-Litter train Gypsy (my hedgehog)
-Exercise at least 2x week!
-Get straight A's
-Watch Taylor graduate and help find a job!
-Find an internship

....I just realized this is going to be a very big year!!

misplacedselchie | 347 comments Mine is to get off my lazy behind and finish my two manuscripts and maybe publish one of them

message 5: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Lora! I didn't know you were writing anything. Let us know if you publish anything. It would be wonderful to support one of our own. :P

misplacedselchie | 347 comments Yes, I have 2 in the works. I wrote them during NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month) in November. Hit the goal to "win" (50k in 30 days) but haven't touched them since so they both need to be finished and edited. A lot, LOL. I will let y'all know if/when anything happens :)

message 7: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm resolved not to let my reading fall on the wayside. I'm expecting February 1st and everyone has been insisting that I'll never get to read once I have a baby but I'm bound and determined not to let that happen.

Oh, and I guess get back into shape once he gets here. There's a gym and a pool in my complex so shouldn't be too bad.

message 8: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Angela! Congratulations on your little man! Once he gets here, read to him. I'm a child studies major and I wish I could stress to parents how important it is to read to children. Even in the womb!! Don't let other people tell you about your reading and your time. I bet that little man is gonna love books like you. :)

misplacedselchie | 347 comments Angela, you'll manage to find time! My LO turns 2 next month and I still managed to read a ton. Babies take a lot of naps ;)

message 10: by [deleted user] (new)

Haha thanks guys -- I'm guessing people who say that aren't voracious readers to begin with.

He's already got himself quite the little starter library! For my shower we asked for books in lieu of a card :).

message 11: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Angela that's a wonderful idea!!

message 12: by Nia (new)

Nia Rovnaia (villania) | 13 comments Lora, same here. "Won" NaNoWriMo, but now I feel like my novel turned out not the way it supposed to. So my resolutions are: to finish/rewrite this novel, to write some short stories, to travel at least twice and to run a marathon, but not sure about the last one yet.

message 13: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) I've never had a drive to write a novel until I started this group. So much creativity here. I may have to give it a shot.

message 14: by misplacedselchie (new)

misplacedselchie | 347 comments Eugenia, I know right?! I originally was trying to do the "main character falls in love with the reader" plot with some world creation and other characters were like "No Lora, we're gonna hunt vampires in Ireland." And well, we all know who ends up winning. Then they throw in all these all loops and twists that I did not see coming. /sighs

Jessica, I would recommend it! Even if you decide to do it for yourself and nt publish, it is a great experience. My best friend tried it this year and was amazed that she was able to push through and do it. We also have an amazing group on Facebook that you can join (even if you do not do nano) where encouragement and help are abundant.

message 15: by Nia (last edited Dec 29, 2014 01:42PM) (new)

Nia Rovnaia (villania) | 13 comments Lora, that's exactly what happened to me. It's like characters have minds of their own.
Yours sounds pretty interesting though, both the original idea and the turn out.

message 16: by Michelle, Mod Assistant (new)

Michelle (girlvsbook) | 403 comments Mod
@Lora, you wanted your character to fall for the reader? That sounds difficult to write but absolutely fantastic!

message 17: by Helen (new)

Helen Lewis | 3 comments Mine is to read 40 books because I want to read more and I think a specific target will help. I just piled up 23 physical books and have easily 17 on my Kindle. One is an anthology which I want to read a little every day *I had this book for 13 years! Feeling excited about reading and learning more in 2015!

message 18: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (amateursuperhero) | 66 comments Oh man, is it already time to better myself? I guess I better make a list.

1) Graduate in May with a 3.5+ GPA
2) Find a good-paying internship/job
3) Do 10 consecutive pull-ups/chin-ups
4) Run a 5k, and a 10k
5) Eat out less and cook healthy more
6) Make a simple $100 profit through day trading
7) Complete the reading challenge
8) Write 52 haikus that I can be proud of

I'm sure there will be many new additions throughout the year but these are definitely the things I'd love to achieve!

message 19: by Luisa (last edited Dec 30, 2014 07:18AM) (new)

Luisa (deborahluisa) My goals are similar to all of you:

- Read more: this year I didn't read much. Mostly because i'm working full time and did a MBA and started a Master in Engineering.

- Run 10k. I already run 3km in a good time and shape. I can run 5k and almost die after. I'll try make it better this next year and achive 10k :D

- Stop eating meat. I already am stoping, like baby steps. The last months i'm like "weekday vegetarian". For this next year, i'll try to be a "full time vegetarian".

That is my main goals. There is a few more, but all around this.

message 20: by Adriana (new)

Adriana Pereira (adrianacecilia) Most of my goals are law-school related:

- Start attending my classes (I say this every year though);
- Read all the main and complementary bibliography of my classes;
- Get better grades and have a better GPA;
- Have a better sleep schedule (no more going to bed at 5 am);
- Learn German!;
- Complete the reading challenge;
- Participate in a read-a-thon;
- Take better care of my hair (I know it sounds silly but my hair is the devil!)

I think that's about it! Unfortunately I think I'll forget all this by February ahahah.

message 21: by Alexandra (last edited Dec 31, 2014 07:26AM) (new)

Alexandra Dumitrescu (alexandraxiuliana) Well, I have list, but it's possible I will add more during this year ^^ It's the first time I made such a list.

1. Finish the 2015 Reading Challenge

2. Compete in the Memrise contest

3. Do sport daily!

4. Get an A in the Cambridge exam

5. Get over 9.50 at Logic, 8.50 at Romanian literature and 8.00 at History. If you are interested, here in Romania after you finish your 12th grade you have three important exams at the beginning of the July. The tree exams are called Baccalaureate. Not everybody has the subject I chose. And the grades are from 1 to 10. The Baccalaureate grade is important for some Universities here. But not the one I want to get into. There I will have another exam at Romanian and English grammar. So the
Baccalaureate is not so important for me, but still, I don't want a bad grade.

6. Get into tax-free at Uni.

7. Start being vegan at Uni. Please don't judge. It's not the place to do so. And as a side note: I can't be now, because my parents aren't willing to pay more for another food, so...

8. Buy all the things you wanted to buy in 2014. I have some things I saved money for, but still I need more.

9. Start doing YouTube videos.

10. Enroll into as much clubs as you can at Uni.

11. Learn more about photography.

12. Attend acting classes.

13. Try getting into a modelling agency.

14. Drink 8 cups of water everyday and eat 2 cups of fruit everyday.

15. Visit as many Buddhist communities at Uni and then choose the ones you like. + Learn more about Buddhism.

I have big plans for 2015. :D

message 22: by Jessica (new)

Jessica (jollybookshelf) Wow Alexandra! Those look like some fantastic goals. And we don't judge here ^_^

Oh, another animal person here. But, I want to be vegan, not vegetarian. But I admire everybody who are willing to give up meat. ^^ You rock!

Phuu, thank you. ^_^ This is one of the best groups I've been part so far. Everybody is so lovely. Book readers power!

Biana Angela wrote: "I'm resolved not to let my reading fall on the wayside. I'm expecting February 1st and everyone has been insisting that I'll never get to read once I have a baby but I'm bound and determined not to..."

Angela...remember that it took 9 months to put the weight on and get a little out of shape. Don't expect to snap back right away. Give yourself a little flexibility. Plus spending time with the baby is FAR more important. CONGRATS!

message 26: by Biana (new)

Biana Last year my resolution was to write more letters...the real kind with messy handwriting and stamps and a trip to the mailbox. My first child left home so it was expected that I would have to change my form of communication but what was unexpected was how fun it was and how well received my letters were. I want to keep writing letters.

I am also working on becoming paleo in my diet. It's been a hard road these last few months but I think I'm about 85% there. It's a goal, but not a New Year's Resolution. I'm frightened to label such "life changes" in that cliche way.

Additionally...I'm going to work on being more social. I'm divorced 3 years now and both of my daughters have left home. That leaves me with a very empty nest. VERY. And it's been a rough adjustment. I am ready to start making friends that don't have anything to do with youth activities, carpools, husband's fishing trips etc. This is MY time. And I will embrace it. (eep, that's scary to just think!)

message 27: by Taylor (last edited Dec 31, 2014 01:46PM) (new)

Taylor (amateursuperhero) | 66 comments My mom is the same way, Biana. I'm the only bird in the nest and although she is married to my father, she still gets empty-nest syndrome.

From the child's point-of-view I just wanted to let you know how much it means to us when our parents send letters/mail. It just seems so much more than a simple text and it's something that I've cherished about my parents.

message 28: by Cait (new)

Cait (clickcait) | 480 comments I like reading everyone else's resolutions and I keep thinking 'ooh, I should do that too'.

My main ones as:

1. Blog stuff - keep blogging every day and try to get ahead of myself, also look at how the blog is organised and see if anything can be improved there.

2. Health stuff - walk more, eat more fruit, eat less chocolate.

3. Finance stuff - carry on using my savings account and when I get a decent amount into Premium Bonds to make it harder to spend.

4. Book stuff - Read at least 52 books this year, although if I read 63 it'll finish my book journal, buy a new book journal for 2016.

5. Craft stuff - do more cross stitch, try and complete at least one knitting project a month, try and knit one project from each pattern book I own, try and knit something from at least one of my knitting magazines I've collected.

message 29: by misplacedselchie (new)

misplacedselchie | 347 comments Biana, I'm working on going Paleo too! My family and I have been trying it out slowly and are planning on officially cutting out all the grains and extra crud with our next paycheck. I dunno if you follow any of the blogs, but The Paleo Mom is one of my face :)

message 30: by Biana (new)

Biana Lora wrote: "Biana, I'm working on going Paleo too! My family and I have been trying it out slowly and are planning on officially cutting out all the grains and extra crud with our next paycheck. I dunno if you..."

Lora thanks!! I have spent many hours trying to find the blog that works for me. One discovery that I've made is that I'm actually AIP, auto-immune paleo which is more limiting. But it's worth it. I will def check out your suggestion.

Taylor you have no idea what that means to me!!! I send letters because I'm the mom and that's what moms do. I send them weekly and I try to find fun cards or stickers or draw on the envelopes. All without hearing a peep. I will keep your words in mind and I keep it up!

PS, it's Biana. No C, no R. (when I say that to folks, I can see the gears churn. But it works, the name sticks)

message 31: by misplacedselchie (new)

misplacedselchie | 347 comments The Paleo Mom mostly follows AIP. We MAY have to go that way. I have a higher probability of type 2 diabetes and my husband is very probable with MS. I know some other great blogs that are purely AIP and Whole 30. Lemme find the names and I will get them to you. I most highly suggest The Paleo Mom though. she is pretty great and has degrees in science so she explains everything but makes it understandable for simple folk like me ;)

message 32: by Helen (new)

Helen Lewis | 3 comments Finished my first book of 40...The Freedom Manifesto it was a reread, but I really enjoyed it. I am also going to cook a couple of times a week while listening to The Archers ominbus, rather than listen in the morning, I will do 10 minutes of reading. Feeling happy and I also recommend this book! Happy New Year!

December 1st (yes, seriously, we're talking dead of winter here) my fiancé and I moved into our first home together. It's tiny and dated. The rooms are awkwardly placed. There's one small bathroom, two small bedrooms, and one enormous master bedroom just off the very small eat-in kitchen. Who designed that?! There is hideous forest green carpet in the living room and a questionable squash puree color on the kitchen walls. It is entirely too close to the neighboring houses and the chain link fence in the backyard provides little privacy. The garage is a small, one-car attached space that is hardly usable once a car is inside it. And then there is the deck, like the rest of the house, tiny with a small sitting area.

In short, it is practically perfect in every way! We love it. We've got some home improvement projects in mind for the new year to really tailor it to our tastes, but we couldn't be more smitten with our oddly designed, poorly decorated, tiny little gem of a house. We're a strange little couple, haha. We're so glad to be out of the cramped studio apartment that we've been sharing with our dog for the last two years and yes, to finally have a washer/dryer that isn't shared with the community and doesn't require quarters to operate. So, that is my first resolution, to work on the house.

It has also been a few years since I did any blogging. I use to blog and I really enjoyed it but I had to give it up. Time was a factor, there didn't seem to be any to spare and the quality of my blog really suffered for it. I wasn't satisfied with what I was producing, so I gave it up. I'd love to get back into it. I have discovered while living as a twosome in a cramped studio apartment that I have a great passion for cooking. A while ago, I stumbled on this blog and thought it was just fantastic. The blogger, a fellow gamer, cooks up food from popular video games. With my newly minted love of cooking and my long love affair with reading to aid me, I thought it might be interesting to do a cooking/booking type of blog. I could whip up recipes to accompany books! I imagine there will be a lot of trial/error involved in pulling it off so my plan is to get a few months of reviews and recipes under my belt before I actually re-open the blog. That's my second resolution. In that regard, the challenge will be a major help! My goal is to work out a recipe for each of the books I read for the challenge to have a contingency plan should I have a hectic period where I have to pump the brakes on reading/reviewing/recipe-ing.

Whoa, I wrote a novella here.

Cait (clickcait) | 480 comments Michelle, your new home sounds so cute and cool. I like the idea of a booking & cooking blog. I'd read it. :-)

Joseph-Daniel, joining this group is probably a step in the right direction for your fourth resolution. ;-)

message 37: by Taylor (new)

Taylor (amateursuperhero) | 66 comments Helen, that's awesome! Stepping up to the plate already in 2015!

Michelle, I have a feeling you and Jessica will get along just fine :) expect to have her message you at some point about your home/blog (if she hasn't already).

Joseph-Daniel, I'm sure you'll keep up this year! We have an awesome group here who are very encouraging and if you ever need motivation just talk to some of us and we'll help in whatever way we can.

Bruce, yep, I think that pretty much sums it up haha. Calvin and Hobbes is the best.
