Fiction set in Himalayas with references to Buddhism

I recall the beginning of the book wihich says that newborn childs (buddhist childs I believe) are left to cry until their tears dry out. I read it between 2004-2010 and I cannot find it anymore. I also think that part of the story was set in a cave and I think there was someone trying to find a treasure.

Was the book for kids, teens, or adults?

As I recall the writing was similar to a Dan Brown book so I would say adults but it's been a long time and I was between 12-18 years old so it could be for teens.
