The book starts with a boy waking up in a stasis chamber, and he is the only one left alive in the entire "base" filled with chambers of different animals. I think there is a robot that assists him. he sets off on a journey to try to find the other 4(?) "Bases" of stasis chambers. I clearly remember one of them had a robot protector that was made or nanobots, which misinterpreted the humans final command, which was to "protect the humans." The nanotech robot then proceeds to inject all the animals in the chambers with nanobots, killing them but leaving them unmarred, but dead. The book ends with the boy finally finding an undestroyed stasis chamber base, which he awakens the animals inside, one of them being a human girl.
