Heroine and others are taken from Earth by ship because they have Fae ancestors. She has an affinity to water. The planet's water is weird (thick or poisoned I think?). There is some sort of ruler competition going on for who will take over. She can ONLY protect herself, not defend or protect anyone else, but she takes a young boy under her protection anyway. At one point, she fights and impresses everyone. I read this in ebook format in 2019. I'm pretty sure it's the first of a new series by an established author.
