SOLVED. YA book read in the 90s about an alien boy whose shoes and / or jacket are made from a material not found on Earth. [s]

I honesty can’t remember much except I think the alien boy kinda appears mysteriously and disappears at the end just as mysteriously and I’m pretty sure it’s told from the perspective of someone who befriends him but I can’t remember if the narrator is male or female or really anything much else! I was reading it probably as a pre-teen.
