ABANDONED. a book about magic and a boy

young adult type of book. I know I read it but can't remember the author or title. It's about a boy who discovers he can perform magic. The one scene I really remember is when someone close to him either finds out or he tells them about his power. He's crying, and blowing his nose in the handkerchief, and then he either nods or gestures and the handkerchief floats itself into the laundry basket.
