People are calling cops since Saturday and with the 3 weeks lockdown, the calls are going to increase. They now have the right to separate groups of more than 2 and give fines.

Kristie | 19136 comments Apparently, while our library is closed they have decided to purchase additional ebooks. I've gotten two notices now that books I requested in the past are now available through the library. One I'm super excited about. The other I already bought.

Kristie | 19136 comments I have to admit that I am quite enjoying some of the Corona songs that are coming out of this. They are so entertaining. People are really creative. (Fair warning, there is some cursing in the following videos.)

Here's one of my favorites: https://youtu.be/ojrtwXqqc6g

Here's another one he did that is also really funny: https://youtu.be/3xt58OVnmXU

There are a lot of other people with great videos out there now too.

UK has 66.4 million people. London is 8.9 million.

message 155: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I wonder how London and NYC compare on a side by side comparison. Not for this I mean I'm actually just curious. I knew London had a lot of people tho. Unfortunately most of London I'm familiar with was written by like Dickens or had Sherlock Holmes running around it

Does it have the skyscrapers?

May need to Google Earth some stuff now

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments So about the time the first US case showed up I said well we've spent weeks watching this thing travel around the globe. Hopefully we don't make the same mistakes. But what I gather from you Sarah is we're thinking up the same things that have been tried and didn't work and that's very troubling.

I mean we had a fair warning and prep time. Dang

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I just saw pics of the London Tube! People are packed like sardines! I know it's extra crowded because there are fewer tubes in operation and timetables have slimmed down, but do all these people have essential jobs that need them to travel to work?

message 159: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I know! I just saw them too. Exactly Peggy - they can't all be essential workers.

The problem is, although a lockdown was declared, it wasn't totally clear for businesses to work out if they should remain open or not. It mentioned shops etc but what about other businesses such as builders, printers, warehouses etc. I'm guessing they'll have to bring more clarity or up the lockdown restrictions even more. Rob has gone to work today. They have a skeleton crew and have a rota so only 3 people max at work each day which means he only has to do 2 days this week. But still. It isn't essential work. Hopefully, they'll tell them they won't have to go in soon. My dad gets to stay at home now, although he's kind of on-call and may need to go in to sort out parts if the engineers need any. Two people at his work are now self-isolating :-(

Jayme | 4518 comments Just a little PSA: You should not be wearing any rings, bracelets or watches right now. The nooks and crannies in jewelry are prime real estate for harboring bacteria and this virus loves to linger on metallic surfaces. If you do wear your rings, you should clean them as often as you wash your hands.

message 161: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11628 comments I don't think well be far behind you with a lock down Sarah, given the way people were behaving at the weekend. My househousehold is pretty much in lockdown already. Pete is working from home and we go out to shop or exercise.

I'm praying that they define "essential businesses " it will include WiFi companies!

I took my rings off last week for that very reason. I was struggling to clean underneath and then it dawned on me that the virus could get trapped there.

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments I've just read the news paper about the Netherlands and the UK. It's a relieve that the governement is taking this a bit more serious. Also, 5 states in the US are in lockdown. I can't imagine what a view this gives in NY!

message 167: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I don't have time to check the news today. Some days I don't have time for Corona talk as long as it still isn't impacting my health. You wouldn't believe the issues I had trying to locate some bedding for my cows . I have a feeling this isn't Corona as much as all the strikes and blocking up the railroads in Canada for the past month or two. Nothing worse than calling and hearing were out and no clue when we can get more

message 168: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments And then our president says the doctors would shut down the world if they could. The economy can't take this. The us will be back in business next week enough already

So apparently the pandemic will just end because emperor Trump says it's time to go back to work

Why didn't the rest of your countries just call an end to the pandemic lol

message 169: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Mar 25, 2020 05:19AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Understand Travis, some days it's too busy.

Last night the PM held a press conference. People should stay at home and socially distance. Okay. Except if you have an essential job. Again, okay. What is an essential job? All jobs, except hospo that got closed on Monday.

...

I'm sorry?

... Most confusing message ever. And then, the party was all tweeting messages today reinforcing this like it was a fact. If you are employed, you are essential as economy, but not health, and the fact we need 80% of the pop to self isolate otherwise in 2 weeks we are Italy. But work coz of money! And Economy! And...

Completely negated the term "essential job" now. It's now meaningless at a point of national crisis. Idiots.

I went into work today after that to shut my office down. 10 days in to the new job, go me. Set up a meeting at 3, but we got shutdown by the uni before that. Shut until July, unless we are researching COVID-19. Locked out of offices from the weekend.

Lexx started at home today, so has set up an office on our dining room table. 5 monitors so far. It's pretty full on, but we'll make it work. I'm just more worried about the fact we have a baby rooster who is crowing all over the place and we may not be able to locate him to a farm due to social distancing if he annoys the neighbours.

Priorities, right?

message 170: by Peggy (last edited Mar 25, 2020 05:33AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Latest here is that the growth in number of people infected decreases, due to the measures that were taken 2 weeks ago. However, intensive cares are under a lot of stress. With the models they made, they expect more patients (1100) than there are beds 975) by next week. They can still increase the beds (maximum was set to 1500 in crisis times, although normally there's a lot less), but of course also need medical machines. However, the models also say that the peak will be 2200 people on ICU at the end of May. Good news is that that's still some time away so hopefully more beds and machines can be arranged (it remains the question though whether health care can cope with these numbers). But, wow, to think that we're taking so many measures now, and such a high peak is not expected until late May!

message 171: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments Your uni is projecting a longer timeline in July, Rusalka. You all might be the first to call it.

message 172: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Here schools are still closed until April 6. A study has been set up to investigate the role of children in transmitting the virus and the minister of education wants to await those results before he decides on reopening of schools. It could be 6 weeks before the results are in, so I expect schools to stay closed after April 6.

Some unis here said last week already that they were switching to online teaching until the end of the academic year, unless the situation would change drastically (in a positive way) and we can all lead our regular lives again in May.

message 173: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments For info, we've called off all of Semester 1. Semester 2 starts in July. Our technical restart date is 28 June I think. Which is where the nice restart date comes in. But we are planning for 18 months at this stage just in case, That is insane, frankly. Who knows though right?

Our uni was like - We have a research lab into Covid-19. We are recommending this. We're not doing that. We have to do what we preach. See you, bye.

message 174: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Oh. P.S. Schools are apparently completely safe. Although they have no soap. But fine. Send your kids to school. Oh and teachers who are compromised still have to work so people can go to jobs. Jobs are the most important things. Over teachers lives, or grandparents lives. Jobs. Money. Growth. Business. Money.

No. Soap.

Maybe we all should die...

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I have heard that some states are beginning to ticket people not complying with the social distancing. I have an evil idea. Why not fine them and use the fines to help all the people who can not work. I feel so bad for restaurants and small businesses.

message 179: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I like that ideaRenee. Hit people in the pocket book and they start to listen. And pass it forward.

I have sign on barn now to call first don't enter. My feed company is gonna mail a mailbox for me to mount for delivery slips. Now it's just who will listen. You won't believe how many times you put a biosecurity sign up saying not to enter and no one listens. I had one up on the old door for years. Not one person complied so when we put the new door on the sign went in the trash with the old door

Everyone thinks their exempt.

And then I had to sign a paper at a government building no less. I got there. I called. Asked if I come inside or they come out. Guys like come inside why are you calling me if you're outside. I said you literally have a sign on the door saying don't enter call. He said oh right. You're the first person that actually did that since we out it up

I always knew that people would have a hard time staying inside, but it is hard to believe how stupid some people can be. Yesterday a young man was fined in Buenos Aires, Argentina, for not respecting the mandatory quarantine. He was catching Pokemons.... in Pokemon Go... How can someone be SO stupid???

message 183: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments Sounds like your government Rusalka is following the UKs logic. Although it's not massively logical. When we went into lockdown on Monday it wasn't exactly clear what was essential vs non-essential.

One of the big conference centres in London is being set up as a field hospital. I think they have plans for one in Birmingham and Manchester too.

We had a massive jump in deaths yesterday.

message 184: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments My friend sent a meme showing a display of hand sanitizer. The placard said, "$4.95 for 1st bottle", $95.00 for each subsequent bottle". Maybe that would reduce hoarding.

My grandson is keeping watch for when hand sanitizer comes in. He stocks shelves at the grocery store and said they haven't received any in weeks.

message 185: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I'm not an expert on hand sanitizer. But the price of oil is way down so they don't want to blend ethanol into the gas. I heard they have all this ethanol made for the oil refineries who aren't taking it so they're gonna use a bunch of it to make hand sanitizer

Being I have no clue how one makes hand sanitizer I don't know how legit this is but it's what I've heard.

However people more in the know than me I saw comment the world could never use the amount of hand sanitizer that that much ethanol would make
🤷🏻‍♂️

message 186: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I think they had signs like that in Denmark too, except the second bottle was something like $430. I'm sure it works, although if you're really desperate you just go in multiple times.

message 187: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments A lot of our distilleries are switching from alcohol to making hand sanitiser. It's alcohol based, but not sure which one. But ethanol to me sounds okay as a layman.

First day at home today. Lexx remarked it was so much easier at home without me, and we have months of this!! But seriously, we stayed in until 3.

Then a rumour started circulating that we would be on full on shut down from tomorrow arvo. Drove Lexx to work so he could pick up speakers and a few other things, and ride his bike home so it wasn't locked at work for months. I bought his last birthday present (next week), got some grog (limitations in store now. You can get 3 cases of beer but only 18 bottles of wine. Wrong), and swooped passed Ikea to grab a few things I needed for indoor projects I've been meaning to do for months.

Not the best isolating, but been home one morning and Lexx has done one thing we've needed him to do for 9 months. If this keeps us occupied for a few weeks, then awesome. May need to go and get more wine though tomorrow... We got to the end of our supplies, so it's not a stockpile just a very badly timed restock.

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments I've read an article from the Netherlands that they found the virus in wastewater. So, it said that the virus is found in our poo.

About the schools: in a week we have Easter holidays and I hope there will be school again after that, but I'm not sure. I mean, I'm worried about the lessons that my son is missing, all the new things he needs to learn, but there's no communication about that from the school. He only gets tasks to not forget what he already learned.

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments I try to avoid most of the news about it, because I'll get too worried. I only watch the news on one channel, I read the newspaper where I'm subscrided on and check it's website.

I'm so frustrated about Trump and Bolsonaro taking this so lightly!

@Rusalka: you live in Australia? That's just irresponsible what they' re deciding. But it's economics above lives, it seems. I don't understand it really.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments Saar The Book owl wrote: "@Rusalka: you live in Australia?."

I do.

The thing is here that businesses are making tougher calls than the Gov (see Lexx), or research institutions investigating the disease/virus are making tougher calls than the Gov (see me), or a lot of my friends are ignoring our Gov and listening to Jacinda over the pond in NZ instead of our muppet and deciding to do the same tough calls like staying home and pulling their kids out of school.

It's the other 50% of the pop I worry about.
