Sarah | 18550 comments Yeah the doctor said they were mostly seeing people with covid-like symptoms but policy is to self isolate until test result returned. My colleague had a cold this week so most likely that. I stopped wearing a face mask a few weeks back when the weather got warmer as i was struggling to breathe. Doh!

Sarah | 18550 comments My results came back negative! Woohoo! So I can come out of self isolation now. I'll probably venture back out tomorrow when I need to get some food shopping. Yesterday I felt pretty rough but some hot toddies and the steroids started to take effect by last night lol unfortunately not before I did my rib in from coughing which is a usual thing for me when this happens. Feeling a lot better today, less coughing, so heading in the right direction. God bless those steroids is all I can say.

Esther (nyctale) | 5198 comments well, that second shot got me. That evening i was drained and in bed by 20h. The day after saw me shivering and -- as I am sure my coworkers would agree--- with the IQ of a turnip. I finally gave up on working and went back to bed of about 18 hours. I was totally fine after that.

message 1514: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11660 comments Esther, hope you feel better soon.

Yesterday my cousins 8 year old tested positive, that was in the UK. Also yesterday my cousin here in ireland rang to cancel her planned to us as her 1 year old is ill and has been tested. Results here take a couple of days. Children seemed almost immune to the original virus but not to Delta variant.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Glad you're feeling better Esther, but sorry it knocked you around so hard.

I'm so sorry to hear about your little cousins, Margo. It is horrible that kidlets are so affected this time.

Lexx got fully AstraZenica-ed this week. Just in time for Sydney to go into a delayed half lockdown as they are fricking idiots, and Melbourne to go into lockdown number 5 as Sydneysiders infected them, when they have spent so much effort not infecting the rest of the country. I might be able to sign an expression of interest to get vaccinated in Sept on Wed.

Margo | 11660 comments Good to hear things are finally moving in Aus. You guys could still teach the rest of the world a thing or three about dealing with infection disease though.

message 1517: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Jul 19, 2021 08:17AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Moving in the wrong direction. But I know we are very very very lucky compared to the rest of the world, so we shouldn't grumble.

But 38th out of 38 in the OECD for vaccinations though. Not where we should be.

That said, here in Canberra we are now 366+ days without an infection. But we are terrified that one person will bring it down the highway from Sydney and stuff us. We have 2.5 hospitals for 450 000 ppl. And we can't get vaccinated, particularly those of us under 50.

Lexx is lucky he got a smart doctor and is persuasive when he wants something and does his research, plus his underlying conditions. And the government keeps issuing things telling us we need to get vaccinated as under 50s are not doing our part. But we are the ones begging to be vaccinated and are not allowed to be as our government bought 90% of the wrong vax type.

message 1520: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59989 comments For the first time in over a year, we have zero active cases in my city. However, Calgary and Edmonton are up. It's been just over two weeks since restrictions have been lifted. The numbers will probably continue to climb because Stampede is now over.

Those of us who've been vaccinated are the privileged ones Rus. I misspoke. I know your government screwed up big time on the vaccines and that is why they're so vigilant (mostly!) with the lockdowns. Your fears are valid and you have the right to rant. It is ridiculous that such a thriving country can't get it's citizens vaccinated.

No no no, I don't think you misspoke at all. Sorry, I didn't mean that at all.

We have a different aim than other countries. We don't want it here at all. Adelaide locked down tonight with less than 10 cases. Our cases are tiny, but we are beginning to have deaths again which is terrible. We are lucky, although those families are very much not.

I am just so frustrated as where we are was preventable. Wasn't ranting towards anyone. Just woman yelling at cloud.

message 1525: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59989 comments Well, I'm shocked.

In spite of numbers rising quickly from the Delta variant, Alberta has decided to completely ignore Covid. As of August 16th, everything stops. No restrictions. No quarantining if you get Covid. No testing. No contact tracing.

The CMOH said that it was time they focused on other viruses, like the flu which they expect to rise in numbers this year. Wearing masks, washing hands, and social distancing help reduce the flu numbers too, so of course they will rise when you stop protecting yourself and others.

I've heard a suggestion that it's all a coverup. They made a huge mistake holding a super spreader like the Calgary Stampede. They claim that 85 ppl got Covid from the stampeded. We are at approximately a R2 rating, which means that every one case causes 2 additional. One way to hide the consequences of the mistake, is to abscond on your responsibility and not test, not trace, and pretend it doesn't exist. Let's play like we're ostriches.

On Jul 18 (last day of the Stampede), Alberta had 579 cases. Yesterday, it was 1520. My city had 0 cases, and we now have 30. They're telling us that 70% of the population has at least one vaccine, and that 50% are fully vaccinated. I rather doubt it's that high when you hear the spewing of the anti-Vaxxers.

I just have a sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach.

message 1526: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments Oh my, Janice. That doesn't make any sense to me. I can understand we have to learn to live with this because it is obvious it is no going away anytime soon, but there are measure that are effective and pretty easy to follow. I hope they reconsider this.

message 1527: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11660 comments It sounds like Alberta is going for the herd immunity approach, along with many other places. We have just reopened pubs and indoor dining with many restrictions still in place, despite trhe warnings of doctors and the evidence of 1500 new cases per day.

My young cousins who got it recovered quickly so lets hope that is a sign that the optimism of the powers that be is well placed!

message 1528: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Everything is back open here now too all though we still have testing and tracing. Cases were going up here and a lot of people were self isolating. But in the last week cases have been consistently coming down. So who knows what will happen. We've had food shortages due to lots of people being pinged by the tracing app for having contact with someone who tested positive. They've called it a pingdemic!

message 1529: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1793 comments Cases are going back up in BC. We were down to 40 or 50 a day and then they decided to stop making masks mandatory. So it's going up.

They have a small outbreak in the Okanagan (popular vacation area), probably all those Albertans!! :)

I expect that as people filter back home after vacation, the cases in other areas will spike and we'll be back to mandatory masks.

Probably! LOL!

message 1531: by Katrisa (new)

Katrisa | 4477 comments I am starting to stress about a bit. I live in Utah which is kind of an anti-vax state. Our cases are spiking again and our legislature made it illegal to require masks in schools (K to college) and I teach kindergarten so none of my kids will be vaccinated and many of their parents won't either because it is a low vax county I teach in. During Jan-Feb of this year during our last spike I had 4 students in my class test positive. I am thankful to be vaccinated, but with this spike and being shut in a room with 26 unmasked and unvaccinated humans for 7 hours a day still puts a stress on me possibly getting Covid anyway. I just wish people in my state would vaccinate :(

message 1532: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments well thats weird. Here in NY most people I see via facebook are on the unmask the children kick as theyre talking about having k-12 mask again for the next school year. idk i really dont have an opinion I just do whats asked of me. Masking really isnt a hassle to me but to each their own. Apparently many people are highly incovenienced by a mask

message 1533: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1793 comments The part I object to is being told by random strangers how bad masks are for me.
I am not judging them for not wearing a mask (well, only a little), why do they care if I am?? And why do they feel the need to tell me these things??

message 1534: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I don't understand why people care so much if people are masking. It's just weird. People have too much time on their hands to argue over this petty crap.

I am not in general in favor of masking students!! But where I teach the vax rate is in the 30% range and that is where I worry. And with the CDC advising even vaccinated people masking indoors I can't help but worry that I will probably be exposed to an extended degree because my kids' families have a high likelihood of not being vaccinated.

message 1536: by Travis (new)

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments I think quite a few people are vaccinated around here. My kids go to a summer school program. Not summer school in the traditional sense. Right now for summer they only have to mask on the school bus

message 1537: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Hopper | 2433 comments Chiming in from middle Georgia. My granddaughter starts school next Wednesday in the second grade. All students k-12 have to wear masks as do all staff. This is changed back from less stringent demands. She lives in a suburb of Atlanta. In our county system, south of Atlanta, there are no restrictions, yet in a community in South Georgia all students and staff have to wear masks. This was decided in a board meeting last week. The consistency is all over the place and parents are fussing. Yet, there is an uptick in cases. And…all those kids from various vacations, etc. have not been back together yet. I forget the statistics in Georgia, but I believe less than 50% have been vaccinated.

message 1538: by Margo (last edited Aug 05, 2021 02:31AM) (new)

Margo | 11660 comments Here we are about 73% fully vaccinated. There is a big push to kids done before school/college terms start in September. Most people here want the vaccine as the level of restriction is less when you've had the shots, you can dine and socialise indoors and do some international travel.

Of course there are some die hard antivac-ers. It will be interesting to how many do refuse the shots.

message 1539: by Esther (new)

Esther (nyctale) | 5198 comments I heard yesterday that 67% of Quebec were fully vaccinated and they were expecting to reach the goal of 75% for September. This being said, the younger crowd is the one that are dallying and have 0 or 1 dose only. And school i about to start.

So it is not surprising that our PM said that they would announce some public health measure later this week. Hopefully not the curfew again...

message 1540: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59989 comments Alberta's CMOH issued a statement the other day apologizing for not being clear in her earlier press release. She doesn't believe that Covid is gone. She says it's here to stay so it's time to normalize it and move on to other health issues like opioid abuse and syphilis. *smh*.

People are just asking to test, trace, and isolate if you're infected.

message 1541: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Syphilis? What is this? 1820?!?

message 1542: by Janice, Moderator (new)

message 1543: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Aug 05, 2021 07:33AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59989 comments Apparently, syphilis went from 160 cases in 2014 to 1753 in November 2019. There have been 235,244 cases of Covid in Alberta since it started, and there 2282 active cases right now - so yes, I can see the urgent need to switch focus. *sarcasm*

When Kenney took over as premier, the government closed safe consumption sites and we're see now how effective they were two years later.

message 1544: by Rusalka, Moderator (last edited Aug 05, 2021 07:48AM) (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Look, I get that we need to test for STDs and a lot of STDs have flourished now we aren't terrified of a HIV diagnosis like we were in the past 30-40 years. But we can treat it with antibiotics, and it takes years to eat your brain.

We had a 27 yr old in Sydney yesterday on day 13 of covid infection go from tired, to dead.

I mean... Its a public health crisis that should not be ignored at all. But maybe a pamphlet with your covid test?

message 1545: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59989 comments I agree that it shouldn't be ignored. The government should have the resources available to do both.

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments Hi all I am back in lock down. It is not mandated by the state but by my husband. He is terrified by the delta variant. I am just getting the cast off my leg and had big plans. LOL This has not been a lucky year for any of us. Good to see you all again.

message 1549: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1509 comments We are back in mandated lockdown here in south-east Queensland, with worryingly many Delta cases among schoolchildren. Back to the joys of homeschooling. Harrison spilt milk on his laptop which promptly stopped working just before online lessons began. Luckily he was able to use the iPad while the laptop dried out. Fingers crossed it will be ok. And you know the withering look you get from teenagers when you warn of liquids near keyboards? It’s the one that says “I know, you don’t have to tell me.” Imagine my satisfaction in giving him the “I told you so.” look.

Lol small wins!! I hope the laptop survived. I am glad Harrison is okay, as when I heard it was going through schools I worry about him.

Been thinking of you these past weeks. I am sorry you are in this stupid madness again. I am assuming we will join you guys in lockdown at some stage, but one of the benefits to Sydney hating Canberra so much is that we've been very lucky with no cases here. That and no Sydneysiders ;)
