Jenn | 3029 comments I am just North if Janice, and I did actually go for the jab. But, I am not putting much faith in the reduced restrictions as I now know four people who contracted COVID after getting stuck. I think that even the people who got stuck are forgetting that the first shot is only a percentage of your full dose coverage, and as far as I know all of the readily available shots were developed around the original strain, not necessarily as potent against all of the variant that are rampaging through the world now. Don’t get me wrong, I have people that I want to hug too, but the world as I see it is going to keep me cautious a good while longer (probably helps that my huggables are in another province lol). Stay healthy everybody ❤️

Janice (jamasc) | 59954 comments I'm not trusting of the planned lifting of restrictions. When the vaccines were developed we were told that the efficacy of the first shot was about 60%. Now, they're saying it's 80%, and I feel like I'm being gaslit. Was not the purpose of a 2-shot system to bring the efficacy up to 90 plus%. How did we go from almost a full lockdown to no restrictions in a month with 70% of the population having only had the first shot?

message 1353: by Jenn (new)

Jenn | 3029 comments Exactly Janice! And now we are being called conspiracy theorists by the conspiracy theorists for being cautious lol

Janice (jamasc) | 59954 comments We had our book club meeting last night and they thought it would be okay to meet in the host's back yard. The hostess asked that we park a block away at the school and walk to her house so nobody would get fined. I said, "Sorry, if we're going to break the rules and cover our tracks, I won't be be coming." I apologized if I offended anyone. Why should I apologize to people who want to break the rules? They decided to hold it on zoom instead. Two of our members were proud to say that they agree with civil disobedience. I'm so sick of this attitude.

message 1355: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1792 comments I think BC is basing it on first shot only. While we seem to be starting with the second shots, I doubt we will be fully vaccinated by their timelines.

message 1356: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1792 comments We're open for up to 10 outdoors and 5 indoors now. But still have travel restrictions.
I am most concerned that they seem to be proposing reducing the mandatory masks to recommended in July and I don't like the idea. I work in an office building, no openable windows. I hope my workplace keeps it mandatory.

I'm all for civil disobedience in certain circumstances. But not when my actions could kill others. To me, that's not disobedience. That's pure and blatant selfishness and callousness. Good on you, Janice.

Jenn | 3029 comments I agree Janice, and am sadly in a similar situation. The leader of my local club has decided that the next meet will be on her patio, but she has been in Nova Scotia for lobster fishing season and flies back the day before the meet 🤦‍♀️ so, let’s see, she’s traveling through multiple airports the day before, there have been as many as twenty show up to meets, and she has a small child and two dogs 😞 I will be staying home 😞

I hear you! The lockdown restrictions have been eased really quickly here too because off the vaccines but there are many who still haven't hhad their second shot and under 30s haven't had theirs yet. Social distancing has become personal choice here amongst friends and family. The plan was all rules would be scrapped here end of June. We find out in a couple of weeks if that will happen or not. Cases have started to go back up again and they are saaying we're at the beginning of another wave.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I had my second shot today. I can tell already that my arm is sore, just to lift it and move it around. I got the second dose in the same arm as the first. Maybe I should have switched arms.

Glad your family is doing ok, Janice.

Janice (jamasc) | 59954 comments I just heard that second shots have been approved here so I will call this morning.

Jayme | 4527 comments Good luck with your shot Cherie.

Now for "you won't believe this" COVID news... In my state it is illegal to wear a mask that hides your identity except for Halloween, occupational and a state of emergency for health reasons. Our governor will be lifting the state of emergency June 30th, so under the law those who continue to wear a mask (me in certain public places) could be arrested for concealing their face. Our general assembly is now scrambling to update the law except everyone is on holiday. Unbelievable!

message 1365: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4536 comments Glad you got your shots completed, Cherie.
That's some law you've got going there, Jayme.
Well, I just came back from my thoracic surgeon and got final good news. I had developed a few anomalies on my lungs post covid including a dense spot on one of them. After a year of watching and periodic CT scans, it's been determined that it's benign (so not cancerous, just scar tissue) and has shrunk a bit. Must be all that walking and breathing I've been doing. Never underestimate breathing. Woohoo! 👍

Janice (jamasc) | 59954 comments That is great news Roz! I'm so happy for you.

Jayme, that's insane. Before Covid, my friend was battling 3-stage breast cancer and had to wear a mask in public. So what a people like that? They're breaking the law?

One of my friends gave me a ride to an appointment today and we went for ice cream after. She was really annoyed about wearing a mask and said she could hardly wait for it to be over. I shocked her when I said that I was considering wearing a mask during regular flu season since it proved to be so good in curbing regular flu. She was appalled.

If you need a mask for medical reasons you can also wear it, but you have to have a note from your doctor.
I've worn masks on planes before during flu season. There is always someone behind me coughing up a storm.

Jayme, the law is an ass!

I'm getting my second shot tomorrow.

Sarah | 18550 comments I'm totally going to keep wearing a face mask during flu season each year even when covid is gone. I have not had a cold or flu this year at all!

message 1372: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Awesome news Roz!

I have been a little tired the last two days, but I think I am over it. My arm stopped being sore the day after my shot. I am good with breathing, but I really must start doing more walking. I am also not going to stop wearing my mask. My work place edict is the we will wear masks inside and outside, if we are on campus, and even at our desks, unless we are eating or drinking until they tell us to stop. All of us that are working from home will keep doing it until they decide on the new work place plans. I have signed up to be in the hybrid model, so will be working from home and only going to the office one or two days a week. They are trying to decide who is going to have a cube and who will not now. They are going to roll out "the plan" at the end of the month - they say, but it may take until the end of the year for the final directives.

Same here, not even the slightest cold for about 1.5 years! I don't think it's due to the masks though, but the better hygiene (I wash my hands a lot more than I used to), the distancing, and also that I was at home so much. And when I am out, like in the train or at work, there are only people without complaints. I think when we go back to normal and I'm surrounded by people who have a little cold but still go out (as we all did until last year), I will probably catch it again.

I'm with you Peggy, when (if!) we are ever told that masks aren't monitory I will be glad to take mine off. I'll continue the hand washing and remember not to touch my face. I hope that people will still cough or sneeze into their elbow or maybe wear masks when we have colds. I will be happy to wear mine when it's foggy out as it helps my asthma.

I hope that shaking hands will be a thing of the past. Elbow bumping just feels silly though, can't we just wave?

Same with us last year, it was lovely! Had a couple of days I was borderline coz I was run down, but not a cold.

However, we're all getting colds this year, although we never had mandatory masks here. But really because we spent all last year mainly at home in the cold weather and I think our bodies are just catching everything now from a year off.

Mum's had every type of itis you can think of (conjunctivitis, bronchitis, sinusitis, etc) this year. And now, gastro is going around as everyone is so lax on hygiene again.

I had to interview people all day today, and one came in went to sit down and then said "Oh I don't know what to do! Is this what we do?" and stuck out her elbow to me. And I laughed, as I thought she was taking the piss. I realised when she was answering that I think she was sincere and I completely blanked her before she had to sit there and answer my questions for 30 mins.

Urgh

message 1378: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3260 comments I think everyone has to do what makes them comfortable. I am not a fan of masks and only wear them when required ( like doctor’s offices.) I think the hygiene part is important and it was scary to me that we needed public service announcements on how to wash your hands correctly. It makes me shiver thinking how many people needed this information. I think more people will be wearing masks seasonally- whatever makes people comfortable is fine by me.

I hope that now that everyone got used to it, mask will get worn when sick here.
A few years ago, i had pneumonia, A real bad one. so I decided to wear one when I was in public. I think I might have painted myself green and stuck antenna on my head and would have gotten less stares. Even in the waiting room of the clinic where a big sign said "please wear mask", I was about the only one that did.

message 1380: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments We are going on full lifting of restrictions in 2 days. I am not to worried about it. I have seen the numbers drop dramatically.

I was talking to a friend from my old research team. They have found that the vaccine does cause any changes to placentas. They need more placentas and for the results to be duplicated in a separate study before they make a conclusion. But this is hopeful for pregnant moms

message 1394: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11650 comments Thanks all, I'm starting to feel human again. It was like having covid againbut thankfully without the breathing issues. The nurse told me, after giv8ng me the shot, that it would likely cause a stronger reaction than the first shot but I wasn't prepared the lose week to it! I wonder if it is because I already antibodies? Anyway, I'm not complaining, I was privileged to get the vaccine.

Jenn, how are you doing?

message 1395: by Peggy (last edited Jun 09, 2021 02:08AM) (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Glad you're feeling better Margo. I was thinking all the time that if you got no health complaints after the first shot, surely the second one will be fine too. Apparently it does not work that way!

We just made an appointment for our vaccinations. The first is June 20, the second July 25. That's right before we go on holiday so I figured it was great we managed to get spots so quickly (even though it's a bit further away than I would have liked) and have it done with before we leave (otherwise we'd have to wait for weeks because the second shot would have to be after our holiday), but now I worry that we might not be able to go if we get sick from it. We don't leave until the 30th though and I don't really expect it to hit us hard.

I hope you're feeling better Jenn!

message 1396: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11269 comments Margo, I'm glad you are feeling better, and now you are fully vaccinated!

Our second shots made us feel very tired, but it lasted a day.

Peggy, I'm glad you have appointments! Hopefully it won't affect your vacations. Most people who have side effects have them for only 1 or 2 days. I hope that is your case.

message 1397: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments You are unlikely to be ill for 10 days from it Peggy. Famous last words, especially after reading about Margo's ordeal. Usually people are effected 24-48hrs wo you should be fine. Where are you going on holiday?

message 1398: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Thanks! We should be fine then :)

We're staying in the country. We go to the north, to a town right next to the north sea, and to Texel, one of the Wadden Islands.

Margo | 11650 comments Peggy wrote: "Glad you're feeling better Margo. I was thinking all the time that if you got no health complaints after the first shot, surely the second one will be fine too. Apparently it does not work that way..."

You'll be fine Peggy. You have 5 days to recover and, thanks to my suffering (Violin music in the background 😇) you will know to be organised before your second shot just in case!

My biggest gripe if that I was taken unawares. I've never had a reaction to a vaccine before and, after a mild reaction to the first shot, I certainly wasn't expecting to spend 4 days in bed after the second one. I would have liked to be prepared.

message 1400: by Jayme, Moderator (new)

Jayme | 4527 comments Peggy you will be fine for your vacation. I was in bed for two days, tired the third and human again by the morning of the fourth day. Just listen to what your body wants. Happy vacation!
