lol, Sandra!

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I was talking to my friends in research. They have found no effects of the vaccination on placentas. It is too soon to say it is safe for pregnant women to get vaccinated but they think it is trending that way. The study needs to be done in other labs with the same results

Sandra (sanlema) | 11269 comments Lol. My husband, my oldest son and I all have our first shot together yesterday and since then we have been joking non stop about it.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hey - I need that microchip!

I guess I am lucky - my arm is not sore at all and I have not had any other issues. Maybe it was my rainbow band-aid. ;o)

Oh - I just noticed that my band-aid is gone and I have a small bruise there.

My granddaughter got her shot yesterday, and said her arm was sore. The Tyenol made it better though, she said.

Roz | 4536 comments Congratulations to all of you who have been vaccinated. Sorry some of you have bad reactions but it's better than getting the virus, right?
They ran out of microchips and rainbow band-aids when I went. Just got the regular red one with extra stick that refused to come off for ages.

Janice (jamasc) | 59959 comments My granddaughter and her boyfriend both have Covid. My son, and his ex-wife both tested negative but they still have to quarantine for 2 weeks because of their jobs. My grandson hasn't had his results yet. He was supposed to get his first vaccine tomorrow but he's on quarantine now too.

Janice (jamasc) | 59959 comments Me too! With her Mom, Dad, & brother under quarantine, she's going to have to rely on others to run errands for them. I've learned how daunting that can be.

On the note of errands, are you okay with your family in quarantine?

My friend took me for groceries last night and tomorrow she's taking me to a nursery so I can get some potted plants for my deck. She needs dirt anyway. She's been super through all this. My appointments go in her calendar so that she makes sure she's available to take me.

I just talked to my son and he said that my grandson's results came back negative and my granddaughter has mild symptoms.

It's ridiculous that my son tested negative and has to quarantine for 2 weeks. He's had his first dose of the vaccine. You'd think they'd reduce his quarantine to 3 days after the negative test. The reason he texted was to ask about curb-side pickup for groceries because he's out. He lives alone, 20 km out of the city, his mother can't drive, and his ex-wife and children are all quarantined.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments What a wonderful friend :) That's good to hear, as I was worried that them being out of action would effectively put you into lockdown too. Enjoy plant shopping!

My limited understanding is that the vaccines (like all vaccines) don't stop you from catching it. So you still could become infectious any time in those 14 days (i'm guessing he has to be tested a few times in this time frame?), and may only present mild symptoms or none. But you could start an outbreak. When we are all vaccinated, the likelihood of us catching it will be a lot lower, and those of us who do will have a mild case. Until we get to that herd immunity level though it's still important that we are uncomfortable for a few days to prevent the outbreaks.

Really annoying though. Particularly when you are living in more remote areas.

Janice (jamasc) | 59959 comments I don't think he'll have to be tested again. My massage therapist was diagnosed with Covid the beginning of April and she didn't have to get tested again.

Things are so inconsistent, it boggles the mind. A church can have an indoor service with a maximum of 15 people. Unless that service is a funeral, and then there can be only 10. But if they move that service outside, the numbers are reduced 5. No wonder people are getting frustrated.

Urgh, that doesn't make sense... Here, if you are a close contact you get tested straightaway. Then if you are someone they say still has to do the 14 days isolation you get tested again between days 7-10 (can't remember exactly), and again on the last day. So if you are a... "late bloomer"?... you're not released out to infect everyone.

That is ridiculous. And if you go widdershins to church around the mulberry bush is it 20 people? As people should! The simplest way to make people stop paying attention to important things is to make them complicated.

message 1323: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I always feel bad posting here because I stopped reading this thread a long time ago as it made me too anxious and stressed, so I never respond to posts here. But now we seem to slowly crawl out of it, so I might start following it again.

Just wanted to share that maybe you remember me writing over a year ago that Rob lost his smell and taste (that was in March 2020). He went to see his GP and also had an examination in the hospital, but back then Covid had only just popped up, and there was no link at all between covid and smell/taste loss, except if you googled you found some indications. It definitely wasn't considered a symptom.

His smell and taste have improved compared to a year ago, but still they are distorted (in a bad way), and some things he still doesn't smell or taste at all.

Last week he went to see his GP again, and this time he was sent to hospital to have his blood tested to see if he has antibodies. Turns out, he has. So, highly likely that he had covid when there were only a few known cases here. He had no symptoms at all (only the weekend before he lost his taste and smell both of us had a very slightly sore throat, but so little that it was hardly noticeable).

I think what frustrated him most the past year (besides the actual loss itself) was not knowing where it came from, and whether it was covid. So I'm glad he knows now.

message 1324: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11650 comments Sounds like you might have had a mild dose too Peggy. They're not doing any antibody testing here, at least not through our health service.

message 1325: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments Yes, I wonder... my parents visited us a week before and they got very sick the day after they visited us (but thought it was just the flu). My uncle got sick in the same week and they had been in contact. My uncle was tested positively months later on antibodies as part of a study conducted by health services. It's not standard procedure here either. I think Rob was allowed to get it done because he told his GP that he had a hard time accepting the taste/smell loss because he doesn't know the cause of it.

message 1326: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11269 comments I'm glad that at least he knows the reason now, Peggy, and I hope he recovers soon. More than a year with taste loss! That is a long time!

Esther (nyctale) | 5195 comments @Peggy. I would be glad to know. Does not change the consequence but at least you understand what happened.

On my end, I had my first dose of the vaccine Monday. Second one is planned for September, but I expect to be called to have it earlier.

They announced that 75% of Quebec population had taken an appointment for the 1st dose of vaccine. That round should be done at the end of June.

They are lifting our curfew next week WOHOOOOOOOO. and we will be allow visitors in our yard, I can't wait. I have not visited or talked with a friend face to face since last fall.

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1792 comments Geez Esther, since last fall is such a long time. I hope you enjoy the new found freedom. :)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments That's fantastic Esther!

message 1335: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Peggy, I'm so pleased that Rob finally knows what the cause of the loss of taste/smell is. I figured that would be the case. We have no antibody testing here either, unless people are experiencing suspected long covid with no covid test being done. I think you can pay privately too.

So pleased that your friend has been helping you Janice, especially while your family are all quarantined. How are they doing now?

Restrictions were relaxed again here in the UK. We can now go in people's houses and pubs and restaurants are open inside too, plus a load of other things. The one that I'm finding odd is that social distancing among friends and family is now down to personal choice. I think this should have waited a bit until we see the affect of inside socialising and for more people (especially younger people) to be vaccinated. We also have quite a lot of cases of the Indian variant popping up and there is still uncertainty as to whether the vaccine cover us for that. I think we've had a 30% increase in cases with this variant in the last 2 days which is a bit worrying. Things have been going so well and I'm worried they've gone and screwed it up again and we'll be back in lockdown again in no time.

message 1336: by Sandra, Moderator (last edited May 20, 2021 06:43AM) (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11269 comments I feel the same way about restrictions being relaxed here, Sarah. People fully vaccinated is not required to use a mask indoors in most places. The distance to socialize had been reduced weeks ago, because it was found out that using a mask 3 feet was enough (not the previous 6). But now that the mask requirement was dropped, the 6 ft didn't come back, as I would have guessed.
I think people are being overconfident about the vaccine and things are going too fast. I'm eager to come back to normal life as anyone else, but I think we should go slower and evaluating the effects of the changes in measures one at a time.
This week there is a poll in our local newspaper. The question is "How long will it be before you feel comfortable going out in public without a mask?", and so far 56% of the people have answered "already comfortable", which I find very surprising. (25% for "after we hit 70% vaccinated" which sound way more reasonable to me). I would say masks are the easiest of the measures (compared with no seeing people for months, curfews, lockdowns, etc). Why can't we just keep it for a while and see how thing evolve?

message 1337: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59959 comments Thanks Sara. I've heard that my granddaughter and her boyfriend have mild symptoms. My son is off quarantine this Saturday and he goes back to work on Tuesday. I believe my grandson is off quarantine at the same time.

message 1338: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19187 comments I'm terrible about keeping up with this thread too, Peggy. I only pop on occasionally. I'm glad Rob finally knows what the problem was with his smell & taste. I had forgotten about that until you just brought it up again. I hope it comes back to normal for him at some point. It must be so frustrating.

Janice, sorry to see that your family wasn't well, but glad they are doing better and starting to get out of quarantine.

Sandra, we've been talking a lot about masked not being required for vaccinated people here. The issue, of course, is that there's no way to tell who has been vaccinated and who hasn't. It is basically left up to the honor system, which clearly doesn't work. Those people who don't believe in vaccinations will probably be the first to go mask free. My friends and I have discussed and we will likely continue to wear ours indoors for a while regardless of guidelines. I have noticed that a lot of places have a mask requirement posted and since they are private businesses they don't need to stop requiring masks even once the guidelines change. It'll be interesting to see how this goes.

message 1339: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11269 comments Yes, many places have decided to keep the mask requirement. Both the elementary school and high school my kids attend, for example. Many parents were exited about the no-mask news, but both schools sent emails right away saying we had less than a month before summer break so we better stick to the measures that have worked so well until now. I am grateful they did.

message 1340: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19187 comments I agree with that, Sandra. Why change it now? Just finish the school year.

message 1341: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59959 comments My son called today all excited. The rules have changed and if you've had one vaccine and come in close contact, you only need to quarantine for 10 days. So he's done. He was getting ready to go for a run. Tomorrow, he's going to run an errand for me. Yay!

Janice (jamasc) | 59959 comments More rules have changed in Alberta. This time it's based on number of vaccines rather than hospital admissions. It's 3 tiered and estimated to be completely unrestricted by July (just in time for the Calgary Stampede) if 70% of Albertan's have their FIRST vaccine. *smh*

message 1349: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1792 comments That sounds a lot like the the new 'slow start' program they started here in BC. Though I don't think we go unrestricted until September. But they are proposing a lot less restrictions by July if we hit 70% vaccinated.

Are they basing that on the first shot or fully vaccinated? The US is reportedly at 50% fully vaccinated.
