Margo | 11659 comments Thanks Cherie and Mandy. That sounds like a great break Mandy. It will do you all the world of good.

We had a scare with my cousin. She is a medical receptionist and so she has been attending vaccination clinics and was vaccinated herself on Saturday. On monday she had a temperature and was sent home from from work and for a covid test. She became quite ill - bad cough, temperature, headache, nausea.

The covid test came back clear and she is being treated for allergic reaction to the vaccine. It was the Oxford vaccine which contains the live bacteria.

It is worth mentioning that she had Melingitis as a teen which has probably left her immune system hyperactive but she is a healthy young woman of 36.

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I've ignored this thread because I limit my corona intake, but I have to vent.

As of Saturday, we have a curfew. You're not allowed outside after 9pm. Saturday evening there were riots in 2 towns. Sunday during the day there were major riots in 2 big cities. There has not been anything like it in 40 years. Then yesterday evening, riots in more cities, about a dozen, including mine. Now, riots again in even more places, and getting worse.

This is not protesting, this is just willful destruction. They break windows of shops, plundering, setting stuff on fire, throwing over cars. Groups of 100-200 people going completely crazy. It looks like something apocalyptic. It's so useless, it has nothing to do with not agreeing with the rules. I'm literally almost crying when I see the footage. It's just so so sad. I think I'm going to hide in a hole and not come out until this is all over.

message 1007: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments I saw the riots in the news yesterday. It is certainly exaggerated for a 9 pm curfew. I don't know what's going on with people.

Take care ❤️

message 1015: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11659 comments Now 3 people in my cousins workplace have tested positive, 2 of them have also had the the first vaccine shot. Cassie is still very ill and is being retested.

My big worry if she does have it is that my aunt would catch it - she lives with her and has COPD.

Rioting sounds terrible. I'm not picking up on anything that doesn't directly impact me ATM.

message 1016: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments @Peggy: I saw the riots on the news. It's just plain destruction. If you want to protest, do it then in a non - violent way. These people are just looking to break things and create chaos.

@Margo: I hope Cassie will feel her better soon and that your aunt stay safe.

I've avoided this thread for a while, because it made me feel that 2021 will be worse than the year before with all the variations of the virus and people getting corona - tired.
I work as a medical receptionist in a mental hospital and our work is providing us the vaccin, but no idea which one and when. I was reluctant about it, but I'll get it, just to feel a bit of normality again and for my work. My husband refuses his and I understand his reasons. I've got the same reasons too, but still...
Now the governement is targetting the children and the young adults...again...by wanting to close the schools, no after school activities...I mean, they've suffered enough and I hope that they won't decide to do that. I'm so tired of this. It feels like this pandemic is a roller coaster we can't get out.

This demonstrates the fallacy of only giving people the first shot to stretch the vaccine out. It's only 95% effective after the booster shot.

My sister had her second shot. The first time, she had localized pain and tenderness on her arm. She experienced more symptoms with the second - fever, chills, aches, nausea.

She's been doing the vaccinations of seniors at her hospital. She said they are all so happy and excited to get the vaccine and she's been enjoying this task.

message 1018: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11659 comments Cassie tested positive! She lives with her 7 year son and my aunt who has COPD. Luckily she's been isolating since she first had symptoms. I guess working in a doctors surgery she hears about a lot of false negatives.

Janice, you're right. One injection won't protect people.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments Janice wrote: "This demonstrates the fallacy of only giving people the first shot to stretch the vaccine out. It's only 95% effective after the booster shot."

I read an article this morning about vaccination in Israel. They have already vaccinated 28% of the population with the first dose, but cases are still going up, same as deaths. Of course 28% is far from the necessary amount for herd immunity, but one would expect to see some little improvement or at least things not getting worse. That might show how only one dose it's not enough. (the other option is vaccine is not as efficient as we thought, but I don't want to even think about it :/ )

Janice (jamasc) | 59978 comments Me either, Sandra.

Canada just announced that they've developed a vaccine that will being human testing right away.

There are multiple other issues going on with Israel at the moment though.

There is a huge problem in Israel with the Orthodox community being anti all measures and prevention (generalisation, but you get my point). The news here was saying the community makes up 8% of the population in Israel but is accounting for 43% of the infections. The footage was of large amounts of people trying to push through police lines and then purposefully coughing on them (edit - unclear sorry. Crowd coughing on the police). I'm really glad that is criminal here now, no front line worker should have to put up with that for doing their job.

Good news Janice. The distribution of vaccine seems to have become very political so it will be good that Canada has its own supply.

message 1025: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59978 comments It's a long way off for distribution if they've just started human trials.

message 1026: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11659 comments My uncle came home from hospital yesterday and is staight onto 14 days of self isolation. There was a covid outbreak on his walk. Though he wasn't in the room as those who got it, they were all nursed by the same staff. Sheesh, is there no end to this....

message 1027: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments Margo I hope your uncle is ok!

You are right. There is no end to this.

message 1029: by Jayme, Moderator (last edited Jan 31, 2021 05:04AM) (new)

Jayme | 4538 comments @Margo - I'm glad your uncle is home.

I just took the survey on where I am in line to receive the vaccine. Currently I am the 268th million person out of 320 million in the US. This may be the only moment that I wish I wasn't a retired teacher and still working - all my teacher friends have had their first round of shots this week. :)

My mother got her vaccine shot this week which is a big relief. She called and wanted to know when I was going to come see her since she will be completely vaccinated mid Feb. I had to explain that it doesn't work that way. I have to be vaccinated too since she could still give me COVID. I told her as soon as I'm vaccinated I will be on my way - sometime end of spring early summer. There is hope. Be well everyone.

message 1030: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments That's good that your uncle is home, Margo.

I've saw something kind in the news today: people in the US that were in a traffic jam where there was a transportation van with vaccins. Because they were out of the freezer, they would expire in a couple of hours, so they gave the vaccins to the people waiting in the traffic jam.

My grandmother called me last Friday to tell that she had a painfull throught and a cough, but no fever. I couldn't convice her to get tested, she always visit us on Friday and she's 76, so I called her daughter, who is my aunt. She convinced her to get her tested yesterday. She'll get the results tomorrow.

Poor Jayme!

My cousin and his wife, both teachers in their 40s, got it and to barely slowed them down. Both back running the day after their quarantine was over, yet my 36 year old cousin, also fit and health, got it 2 weeks ago and is still very poorly. It seems to have no logic.

Hope she's negative Saar.

message 1034: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments It's important to keep quaraintained or low contact until 2 weeks after the vaccins, because you're still vulnerable.

message 1035: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments I hope so, Margo, we'll see. We've got a document from work to get our vaccins, because I work in a hospital and we needed to fill this in if we want to get vaccined. There is already 50% of positive response, but we work here with hundreds of collegues.

message 1036: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments After a week my grandmother got her results. Her doctor hasn't called her back, so she called his collegue that wasn't happy that he didn't called her. She tested negative, but now she's afraid to visit us again and won't come over for a while. Now she's all alone.

message 1037: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11659 comments So many venerable feel that way. My mum is 83 and has severe parkinsons so we've let very few people into the house since March 2020. She's lucky she doesn't live alone because she doen't get out.

message 1038: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2650 comments That's good that she isn't alone, Margo, they need compagny.

message 1039: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11659 comments I'm down for another test :( Pete, an essential worker, got a chest cold, rang the GP three days ago, and was prescribed antibiotics over the phone. I rang today with same symptoms and got the drugs plus a covid test. Since one of my symptoms is dizziness, I've been told not drive. I'll be getting a home test.

My mum and daughter are also not well. I'm the only one whose who's been told to self isolate. There are so many inconsistency.

message 1046: by Margo (new)

Margo | 11659 comments Thanks Rus. I'm not worried, more bemused by how sloppy the system is. The positivity rate here is around 5% so I'm not likely to have it.

message 1047: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19213 comments I empathise with the inconsistent health system that resembles some sort of poultry sans head.

The benefit here is we have very few cases (pending the latest outbreak in Melb and it's outcome) so us being all over the place is less of a problem than you guys.

Hope there are hot toddies everywhere!!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19213 comments Note, that was Lexx's latest strategy. "Hot Toddies!!" "Sure but it's bigger than the flu" "MORE HOT TODDIES!" ...
