Dominique | 1126 comments In Quebec, they decided to have a curfew. Can't go out from 8 pm to 5 am until February 8th. Offices are closed so work from home is mandatory. I used to go once a week to pick up work, so I have to get there today and pick up as much as I can.

Kristie | 19193 comments We have 3 different tests here. The rapid tests come back in 15 minutes, but they have a higher incidence of false negatives. If you receive a negative result, they can send it out and you get results in about 3 days. It can take up to 5 days if it's a weekend, but they work on Saturdays too, so it is usually 3 days. There is also a test with same day results, but I don't have any experience with those.

Kristie | 19193 comments Dom, will you still be able to get into the building if you need to get something later? Or are they not allowed to open the buildings at all?

message 954: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11275 comments Dom, have you worked from home before at some point in this pandemic?

At least it looks like they will not close the libraries this time around.
I am sure your office can find a way to get the work to you. If stores can do "curb delivery", i am sure they can work out something.

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks guys. Still no news on my mum's test results. She's still the same as she was which is good news I think. I suggested her and my dad sleep apart to reduce viral load should she have it and pass it on to my dad so they started that from last night. Hopefully she'll get the results today or tomorrow. My cousin's test came back negative. As for my brother in law, he's pretty ill. He's on day 5 and been in bed for all of that with a high temperature. Still at home at the moment. Rob's sister has a bit of a cough too now but is ok at the moment, still awaiting her test results to come back. Urgh.

As for how long results take, they are saying within 72hrs now. It was within 48hrs. The first test I had it came back in 24hrs but the second one I had I waited just over 48hrs.

Margo | 11655 comments Oh Sahah, you must be worried sick. Hope all your family come back clear.

message 958: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments My sister in law's test came back as positive. She has symptoms but at the moment isn't too bad but her husband is feeling pretty horrid. My mum's test result came back as inconclusive so she has had to go get another one this morning at a drive through centre. They are estimating that will take up to 5 days for results to come back. FFS!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19208 comments Oh that sucks, Sarah. Glad there was a negative in there. But I'm sorry your mum has to go back for another. Sending healing thoughts to your BIL and SIL. Particularly hope he gets better soon.

message 960: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19208 comments We're told 72 hours for a result, but they are turning them around in 12-24. So glad that's on par with you guys. I mean I would think more population, more staff. But I have stopped assuming anything about this pandemic a long time ago.

Huge amounts of our NHS staff are off work due to covid and self isolating. It is ridiculous. They've just agreed to vaccinate all front line healthcare workers but it will still be a few weeks before that actually is done nationwide. There was a massive recruitment drive for the test centres but no idea about staff at the labs where the tests are processed. I think they've outsourced some of that.

Sandra (sanlema) | 11275 comments Sarah, I'm sorry about you bil and sil. I hope things get better soon, and your mom's test comes back negative. I will be thinking of you.

Sarah | 18550 comments The results for my mum's second test came back quickly and is negative. Phew. So I can stop worrying about my side of the family for now.

Yes totally. I've advised my mum continues to self isolate though as if her immune system is low due to whatever she does have, she'd be more at risk of covid. She's more than happy to stay home thankfully. My dad returns to work tomorrow. Rob's sister and her husband are in their mid to late 40s and are generally pretty healthy so hopefully that holds them in good stead. It has still floored them though.

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments I've been MIA for a bit so I am playing catch up with posts.

Sarah--I'm glad your mom was negative and your family is doing ok so far with it. My son (14 yo) had COVID over Christmas so we couldn't spend the holidays with family. He was exposed the last day of school before the break. He had a mild case mostly just fatigue and the loss of taste/smell. No one else in our household had symptoms. I got tested due to working in healthcare, but my results were negative.

Rusalka--As someone posted about our rapid test results in 15 minutes. However, you have to have at least 2 symptoms to get it due to chance of false negatives. Positive results area 98% accurate, but it is only about 80% for negatives. We sent confirmation tests on all negatives and they are usually back in 2-3 days.

Right now COVID is barely in the news here in the US because our politicians have lost their minds. So they are the hot news topic right now.

message 973: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19208 comments That's pretty amazing but I understand that with the speed that the false negatives increase.

I'm so glad your son had a mild case, and no one else caught it. It sounds like a not great Christmas (although i love Christmases that are at home with the large dinner things), but I'm glad you could spend it together at home and no one got ill.

Who would have thought that politics would get so crazy it would overtake the death toll.

Hope you're okay Mandy. Been thinking about you this week.

Thanks, Rusalka.
I am doing well. Our clinic is busy because we are a site giving the COVID vaccines, but I am not one of the staff administering. I was able to get my 1st dose of the vaccine last week. My husband and father also got their 1st doses.
It is a 3 days weekend for us here in the US so we are doing a quick getaway with just us. We rented a house so we will have minimal human contact. Looking forward to going somewhere that is not home or work.

Shirley | 1509 comments Those pictures of soldiers in the Capitol Building - unprecedented (there’s that word again). So much that has happened in recent years has been almost too hard to believe. Have a wonderful rest from the world, Mandy.

message 976: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Sorry to hear your son was ill Amanda but so lucky that none of the rest of the family got it.

My brother in law is still really ill. They are treating him with antibiotics in case there is a bacterial infection as well now as his temperature is still high. Luckily Rob's sister has had no change in her symptoms so I'm guessing it's unlikely she'll get any worse now.

message 977: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19208 comments Enjoy your break, Mandy.

Thinking of your BIL, Sarah. Hope that the antibiotics help him and break through whatever's going on. Jeez. Glad your SIL is getting better.

message 978: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11275 comments Poor man! So many days with a high fever! He probably feels miserable. I hope the antibiotics help, Sarah. I hope he sees an improvement soon.

Margo | 11655 comments My aunt died yesterday after being ill for over a year. I think she had covid but it was 13 months ago before the bug was officially recognised. My mum was taken it very badly, she has advanced parkinsons and this has impacted her health. As you all know, my uncle has terminal cancer. I feel like I'm living in a nightmare. Like everyone, we cannot affend the funeral, we have to watch it on a screen. I can't give my cousins a hug.

We also have our highest numbers ever - 1 in 66 people here have covid.

Margo | 11655 comments Thanks all. Your support means a lot to me x

message 996: by Amanda (Mandy) (new)

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments Sorry for your loss Margo. It sounds like your family is dealing with a lot. I think the hardest thing for people has been the inability to access their normal support systems to cope with difficult times.

It is still crazy at my clinic trying to see patients and also having increased flow due to people seeking COVID vaccines. We are vaccinating about 50 a day at my location and 50 a day at a second location. They did a special day yesterday which should have been a holiday to help with the flow. The nurses vaccinated over 400 people. I really have to hand it to the staff for how awesome they are doing, but I know the ones doing the vaccines are tired. It gives me hope that the end is in sight to this craziness.

Side note: We had an awesome weekend away. I got to check off a bucket list item for me. We went Kayaking and got to see Florida manatees up close in the wild. It was such a wonderful experience and completely free of COVID issues. I really loved sharing the experience with my kids and seeing them just as excited. Even my grumpy 14 yr old says he really enjoyed it.

message 997: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1509 comments The holiday sounds amazing especially being COVID issues-free. Seeing the manatees would have been very special. Grumpy 14 yr olds - yes, I hear you.

message 998: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11275 comments Sounds like an awesome weekend, Amanda! It is wonderful that you could relax and have fun with your family.

My oldest daughter was the grumpy-teenager type too. I know what you mean. She is 22 now and I can assure you that they eventually move over. Thanks be to God.
My second one is the silly- teenager type, and my third is the cool type. My fourth one is 13 and showing signs of being the plant-teenager type. Some days I'm not sure I will survive them...
