Kristie | 19187 comments I'm really disappointed in the way many "leaders" are handling this situation. I find it frustrating that they don't lead by example. It really does make it more difficult for other people to do what they are supposed to when they see others living life and enjoying themselves without the same restrictions.

Janice (jamasc) | 59959 comments I just read a news article that named all the Alberta MLA's and top government staff that went AOL on Christmas - EIGHT! This morning I said 4. Now it's 8. All 8 have been confirmed. One went to Saskatchewan, but the other 7 left the country.

message 903: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59959 comments Oh, and the interesting thing was, the list included all MLA and top staff across Canada. Only 3 were outside of Alberta. So proud!

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I have my date for my vaccine. It will be this Wednesday. I am not sure if I should do it. I am high risk but I am able to stay isolated. I miss the world. But I am thinking it may be better to let someone who cant stay home as I do have the dose.

I'd have it Renee if I were in your shoes! For sure

Margo | 11654 comments @Janice, that explains why he is standing up for them - there are too many to sack! I understand your angry, it isn't good enough.

@Renee, I hafe some misgivings but I will take the vaccine as soon as it's offered. It is our best hope.

message 907: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Go for it, Renee!

I agree with Margo about the politicians. The bad behaviour is so rife they can't sack them all. Lesson to that story is to disobey in numbers, but gosh that's a sad indictment on society.

Janice (jamasc) | 59959 comments Tracy Allard, the MLA who went to Hawaii, resigned over the weekend. She was greeted on her return to Grande Prairie with a banner on her office building welcoming her back with #AlohaAllard. People left cards and notes that told her what they had sacrificed because of the health orders that had been put in place.

The Chief of Staff also resigned, and the premier demoted the others. The outcry from the public after his New Year's Day presser was received loud and clear.

message 909: by Amanda (Mandy) (new)

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments It is really interesting reading how different countries are handling this. I am in the US, so don't even get me started on our politicians. They are still fighting about who won the presidential election 2 months later. I'm in the state of Georgia so we have 2 runoff elections tomorrow and I daily get calls, texts, and mail reminding me how important it is to vote or telling me which politician will ruin our lives.
Here we don't have a national lockdown, it is up to each state what level. Some states are tightly locked down, while others have minimal restrictions. I am in a minimal restricted state. My kids go back to school next week, but some other towns are doing virtual only. My son was exposed the last day before break and ended up being positive so we were quarantined for the holidays. Luckily he had very mild symptoms and no one else caught it. My husband enjoyed his mini vacation from work. However, since I am in healthcare I still had to work unless I ran fever. Our guidelines here seem to be constantly changing and vaccine rollout just started within the last couple weeks and for now are just healthcare, but I believe next week it will start being extended to high risk populations.

message 910: by Sharon (new)

Sharon Hopper | 2430 comments Amanda, I am a fellow Georgian. I share your frustration. I admit that it has been helpful to hear about issues in other countries. Not because I want them to have problems. I don’t at all. It just makes what we are experiencing feel not quite so alienating. I am so ready for the election in our state to be over. As a retired principal, I am appalled at how different counties are doing different things in their school systems, not all consistently and within our county not even the same at all schools. I am glad that your son managed to get through without getting terribly sick. I stand humbled at the courage and stamina that our medical community has shown. Thank you for your strength and service. I wish you and your family well. I also pray and hope that the results of tomorrow’s election will not cause further issues and we can get on with it.

message 911: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments We have just been plunged into a national lockdown with stricter regulations, basically it's the same as the one we had last March. It will be reviewed mid February. Our hospitals are overwhelmed and it really isn't looking good. My Facebook feed is full of people who have had the virus recently and many have family members in hospital. As usual, the government has left it too late to act. They have their selves to blame - who relaxes restrictions at Christmas when the situation is as bad as it was at that point?!! I'm pleased about the lockdown. Hopefully combined with the vaccine rollout, things will improve. What gets me is that controlling the virus can be done without a vaccine, like in New Zealand and Australia have achieved. It just requires swift decisive action, good communication and strict rules which our government is no good at. I also see that we have scrapped giving the second dose of the vaccine to people as prescribed by the research in order to give more people the vaccine first off. So what that will do to people's immunity, who knows.

message 912: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59959 comments How effective will the vaccine be without that booster? That sounds like a useless endeavor.

Thinking of you all in Georgia. Hope it all goes off smoothly.

@ Janice - sounds like public opinion prevailed. Good!

@Sarah - we in Ireland are in pretty much the same situation. We're in full lockdown except that schools are to reopen on 11 Jan. I think that might change tonight.

That's not good news about the single dose vaccine. I can see that happening here. We are getting 40,000 doses per week which means we can do <0.01% of population per week.

Does anyone know if there are plans to licence the Oxford vaccine for use in europe? It would entail more manufacturers.

message 914: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Originally the booster was supposed to be given 3 weeks later. They are now scheduling it for 3 months later. You get some immunity from the first vaccine but obviously not as much as with the booster. No idea how a delayed booster will
Impact things. With some jabs, like hepatitis, if you don't have the booster in the correct timeframe, you have to start the process again.

message 915: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments So I have no idea about this vaccine. And I am musing. And I HAVE NO IDEA AND AM NOT A MEDICAL SCIENTIST (sorry, important at the moment to be clear). But is there any discussion at all, not by government obviously if they are talking about delaying, by medical practitioners or immunologists about the impact on people's immune responses if they delay? Like usually these things are dictated as there is evidence to say you need a booster at this time for X reason. Are the trials to early to back this up? Or just people panicking? Or is it all okay?

I mean, Aus is delaying the vaccine as we are comparatively fine compared to you guys who need to push it out ASAP. So we have the benefit of time on our side. But I know you guys don't which is why I wonder if half vaccinating a shit tonne of people is worse than fully vaccinating a large amount of people.

message 916: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19187 comments Amanda & Sharon - I feel badly that your state is being attacked right now. I'm not sure why everything has focused on your election results more than the other swing states aside from you were overall blue and expected to be red. I'm sure you will be relieved when the run-offs are done and you can at least stop getting phone calls. I feel like there is a lot of pressure on you guys right now!

message 917: by Kristie, Moderator (new)

Kristie | 19187 comments I've been starting to hear things about not giving the second injection here as well. I'm not sure about the science behind it. I know I'm in the last group of people either way. I'm hoping they get this all straightened out and running smoothly before then.

That is what you get when politicians, instead of scientists, are making the decisions. *facepalm*

I don't know about this vaccine in particular, but for others if you do not respect the schedule for second (and/or third) doses you have to start over. Boosts exist for a reason.

message 919: by Renee (new)

Renee (elenarenee) | 1650 comments I was told by my husb that I will get the vaccine. He was angry that I even considered waiting. It amazes me how much he still loves me. I am not the same women he married. He is one of a kind.

Yeah I've no idea. Ordinnarily, NICE guidelines would state to follow what the research backs up. I guess tjey are extrapolating. The firat shot doess offerr some immunity. So more people with some immunity vs some people with lots of immunity seems like a good shout. But it's risky. Surely theree is no precedence. It worries me. And will there be enough vaccine to boost everyone?! We still don't know how long immunity lasts with the vaccine taking doses as researched. What if we just end up back at square one again?!

message 922: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Rob got a call from his work last night telling him not to go in today. He has to make himself available but looks like he can stay home until they work out what's going on.

message 923: by Amanda (Mandy) (new)

Amanda (Mandy) | 762 comments So from what I'm reading from the research is that you get about 50% immunity from the first shot, but it takes about 2 weeks to build. The second dose increases your immunity to 95%. it seems to me delaying the second dose would help prolong the pandemic.

message 924: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 1509 comments I feel happy enough to delay the vaccine if it means we can all get it when it’s totally safe to do so, and we get the correct dosage in a timely manner as recommended by experts. But then I’m in a situation, as a retired person, where I can isolate myself as need be. I so feel for everyone whose livelihoods depend on continuing to go to work. I have the utmost respect and admiration for anyone who works in the health sector too. They have been totally at the mercy of all government decisions (or indecision, to be more accurate. On a happy note, Gary and I celebrated our 48th Wedding Anniversary at a local posh-ish restaurant for lunch. Perfect!

message 929: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I just saw today that the WHO have said delaying the second dose is not backed up by medical evidence. Great. So just dozy politicians playing know it all and gambling yet again with people''s lives.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Hope you're okay Shirley with the Brisbane shutdown. I'm pretty sure you're out of Brisbane proper but I must say I don't really know where the LGA lines are.

For others, the first community transmission in Aus has happened in Brisbane out of our quarantine hotels, so the QLD government has locked down Brisbane proper for three days to see how far it's gotten out.

message 938: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments We are up to 1 in 50 people having covid here in the UK according to ONS. In London, 1 in 30, with some places being 1 in 20. That is crazy! We have just had our highest deaths and cases today. We're already in national lockdown but I think they'll have to bring in something even stricter potentially as this is showing no signs of reducing right now.

My mum has symptoms and had to have a covid test today. So her and my dad are now self isolating. This is worrying as she has COPD and they are both over 70. It could just be a flare up of her COPD but she does say it feels different. Whilst my dad says he has no symptoms, he did cough a bit when I spoke to him earlier on the phone. He would probably say he's fine if his leg was falling off though. My cousin also had to have a covid test yesterday as she has had a fever for the last two days and feeling exhausted. And we just heard today that my brother in law (Rob's sister's husband) has been confirmed positive for covid. I don't know any more than that at the moment. So not good.

Yes Rusalka we ok thanks. We are in the lockdown area. And it’s raining so the three of us are in a little cocoon. I’m going to be the one who goes out to get anything we need, because Gary does not need COVID whilst recovering from major surgery. I’ll don my mask and go to the little shop nearby to get milk and bread, letting everyone else fight over toilet paper at Woolworths. Yesterday I had been ready to do my normal shopping when the news came. By the time I got to the shops, it was chaos - couldn’t even get in the car park, so I turned around and went to Foodworks instead. Along with others who had the same idea. It’s only for 3 days but potentially could be 30.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19206 comments Glad you're okay up there in lockdown Shirley. I've spent the past 10 days trying to avoid my phone and ignore people trying to see me. 3 days of lockdown sounds like bliss right now. I'm with Anastasia, 3 day long weekend with your house. Anything after that there is Coles/Woolies home delivery if you get desperate.

Just wondering as I need to remember we have a MUCH smaller population than you guys, and I had to rethink my expectations on when you would get them.
