True! I couldn't believe what happened in Spain this weekend when people started to be allowed to go outside. SO MANY PEOPLE, without masks, nos respecting the distance... It is incredible... After all they have been through...

I was supposed to be visiting my parents in Amherst, Nova Scotia and visiting my best friend from High School in Sherbrooke.

My flight is booked with West Jet for 24th of June. I am not going to cancel as I would anticipate they will cancel my flight. I will be pushing for a refund and not a credit as we just don't know what the future will be and if, for example, West Jet went bust, I would loose the credit with them.

I would agree with Janice - don't cancel your flight, hang on until the last minute when the airline should cancel. Even if they don't, with restrictions in place, you wouldn't be able to fly in anyway as I am pretty sure flights currently are only bringing Canadians back or you have to have a very good reason to be flying into the country - for example, if one of my parents became ill, I could fly in as a child of a Canadian Resident but would have to quarantine for 14 days.

Then, when it does come time for the flight to be cancelled, push for the refund - don't agree to the credits. Even if you do get to use in the future, I think prices are going to be so prohibitive.

Even though I am with West Jet, I'll let you know how I get on when the time comes.

Yes I saw this and thought the same. I think it's too early for them. I'm concerned they are going to relax locckdown here this week. Lots of people who live near me seem to have already given up on social distancing which is very worrying.

We've noticed a big difference here too Sarah. We have a B&Q near us and a friend told us that people were queuing to get in as far as a roundabout 5 minutes walk away from the shop!

I think as more places open, we will see more people out and about.

It will be interesting to see what plans the government has and how these will be implemented.

Sarah | 18549 comments It's because of b&q has reopened that my dad has ro go back to work today. He works for the company that makes and maintains the paint mixing machines they have there. I don't get how a diy store is essential.

message 509: by [deleted user] (new)

The only time I can see a store like B&Q being essential is when something at home needs fixing urgently - not so people could buy paint. And even then, they could do on-line shopping. I hope the company your Dad works for has put together a proper risk assessment and provided PPE stuff at the very least.

Thanks Anna! Sorry to hear about your trip.

Yes, I did the same with Eurowings, who we were supposed to fly with to Corsica. I waited for them to cancel so that I can claim a refund. However, they never state anywhere on their website that you can get a refund, they only offer rebookings and vouchers. I know it's my right under European law though, so I'm asking for a refund. It's taking ages though.. If you call them you have to wait for hours on the phone, so I emailed. It took about 4 weeks to get a reply, and then they only encouraged me to accept the voucher. Only at the end there was one line saying refunds were possible but it would take a long time. So I emailed again to send me a form to apply for a refund. Still waiting for 3 weeks or so now on a reply to that.

It's like you say, if they go bankrupt I won't have any use for a voucher, and who knows what's going to happen to air travel and prices.. I might not be able to afford it next year. Plus, they also say you have to use it within a year and what you don't use, you lose.

It's good to know the same laws apply in Canada, and I can ask for a refund.

In the Netherlands companies are allowed to give vouchers, but they still have to give a refund if after a year the voucher (or part of it) has not been used. I like that, it gives companies some breating room, but you will still get your money back in the end (unless they go bankrupt, of course).

Right - forgot about mandatory quarantine. Anyone entering Canada has to quarantine for 14 days.

And if a family member gets sick, nobody can visit them in hospital. My friend's husband had a stroke a week ago. He was medevacked to Edmonton and she followed in the car, but when she got to the hospital, she wasn't allowed in to see him.

I saw pictures too.

On the other hand, I also saw a picture of a Danish photographer who shot the same queue of people from two perspectives. In one picture people seemed to really crowd together, while in the picture taken from the other side you could clearly see people were keeping their distance.

So I think some of the photos we see on the news may be misleading too (still, I know there are many people not keeping enough distance and going places while they should stay home!)

I like the parachute simile Peggy. The attitude that we need to stop restrictions is not big here but people are starting to get itchy feet. I think that where numbers of now cases are TRULY maintaining a plateau then our countries do need to start to get up and running again. Very slowly and with vigilance. As distasteful as it is, without an economy the world cannot continue, at least not in the way we would want it to, protection the vunerable

They did open the beaches in Sydney for exercise 2 weekends ago and had to close them within hours as everyone lost their minds and ripped off their shirts, laying about in the tepid sun! It was like Europe in summer!

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19204 comments I do understand the concerns about airlines though with travel. Virgin Australia has gone into voluntary administration here to be sold. They begged for bailouts (which amuses me while Branson is sitting on a privately owned island) but folded before they came. They had millions and millions of dollars of debt. I do not understand how you can operate a company like that.

But still, yes, agree. Push for refunds.

I'm pushing Lexx to think of places in Aus we should visit as interstate travel is tipping to be allowed in a couple of months time With the current trend. And then NZ-Aus travel from our national cabinet meeting today which Jacinda joined in to talk about resuming travel between the countries.

Travis (travistousant) | 6011 comments some products I get for the farm are from Canada. They can;t get their stuff across the border. while I understand it and am ok with the measures taken, its so annoying and involves me having to do more shopping around. Which would be ok if it wasn't that the alternative I've found is lower quality and more expensive which is not what I generally hope to gain by shopping around. Beggars can't be choosy I guess.

NY is preparing to reopen and my area is first on the list as we are getting maybe one case a week. we have the fewest cases in the state, no deaths and only a few people even had to be hospitalized. There are some benefits to living in a very rural part of country. Fresh air and not many people.

I myself have been learning about risk management in milk pricing. we have insurance programs that allow you to put a floor in place based off stock market. prices have been recovering lately with anticipation of the economy reopening. I have been buying coverage to protect my price because as excited as everyone is, personally I think they will open the country too soon and a whole lot of people will get sick or die and the stock market is gonna take another crash or the country will shut back down. I hope that isnt what happens but you can buy coverage quarterly and I am really watching quarter 4 of 2020 and quarter 1 of 2021 because flu season is going to mix with covid and who knows what will happen. heck i dont even know why milk is having a little rally now. Its long been my suspicion that the market has these little brief rallies to give people a chance to do some form of price protecrion. I cant tell you how many times I've seen a rally for a couple weeks and then it drops to a lower price than it started. And usually I do nothing becasue I never knew the tools we had available.

long story short educating myself and trying to protect and keep my business going is where Ive been at lately

Margo | 11628 comments There is quite a scandle going on here because Aerlingus, the national carrier of Republic of Ireland, did a fully packed flight from Northern Ireland to London. No seats were left empty.

Flight leaving Ireland must observe social distancing i.e. 2 meters between passenger which is very uneconomic so basically no passenger flights are leaving the country.

OK, it's out of our jurisdiction but everyone is up in arms about it. Problem in, when you live on an island small as ours it is impossible do business with no flights going and as restictions have been eased across the border I'm sure other airlines were doing the same.

This. This is what I am really worrying about. They are talking about opening campus again in June which is the middle of our flu season (think December in the NHemisphere). I'm waiting for the flu and covid to hit. I've had my flu vaccination (seriously, just get it this year whatever you think about vaccinations), but what happens if you get flu and covid at the same time?

And I mean, our flu season, well at the moment that's only 22 million people. I am predicting that things will be like this again in Feb next year once it goes through the entire NHemisphere and your flu season. I am so so so so happy to be wrong about that, but that is the massive risk I see before we get a Covid vaccination.

Particularly as research was released today that says this strain is mainly a mutation, not the original strain they found.

We've been super unmotivated this week in this house. And we've had the conversation tonight that even if work opens, we are at home for a while. And it sucks. But I figure that a week of slackness is completely forgivable in the marathon of working this through. Just don't tell payroll ;)

I don't blame for being worried Rus. I heard similar concerns being raised here for flu season. Yes it's months away but covid will still be around.

A swap from a patient in france last December was retested and showed Covid so it has been around for a while. The patient in question had only been diagnosed with pneumonia. It makes you wonder...

That really is the thing when you are WFH through these virus restrictions. Everyone expects you to be available all the time. How do you take vacation, when you can't go anywhere? Some mornings, I just do not want to get up and go into my den and log on. I am working with folks in Bangalore, India and it is either at the end of my day, or the beginning of the next, and the girl I am working with just the opposite. She is waking up at 5:30am to check in with me to see if can work together at my 7:00pm, which her 7:30am. If I start at my 10am, it is her 10:30pm. The team in Bangalore called my boss one day because they did not see me on "all day". Totally not true, but how can I prove it? The tools report when we log-in and log-off, but Skype allows options for Appear Away and Appear Offline and I had set my option to Appear Offline so that I was not constantly badgered while I worked on a spreadsheet. I forgot to change it back. :(
Just because we are not going into the office, we still need a mental health day or a vacation day or even a sick day. I do have to admit, with the social distancing and stay at home orders, I have not been sick, even once, since March 1st. I had a migraine one day, but I caught it early and it was not too bad. I just needed to sleep it off, so I did not log-in until the early afternoon that day.

I got a phone call to make an appointment for a hearing test and it made me really nervous. I want to know how many will be in the waiting room, what cleaning protocols, etc. etc.

The caller was misinformed on the purpose of the visit. She thought it was a consult to obtain hearing aides. It's a referral from a specialist for a second opinion on the hearing test. Since I can't travel to his office in Edmonton, he referred me to an audiologist here. That meant that I was to go on a different wait list and she'll call me back. When she does, I will request the 1st appointment in the morning. Avoid a build up of germs.

I'm really nervous about the lifting of the lockdown. People think it means that it's life back to normal. It's not. It just means the crisis for overwhelming the hospitals has eased and it's likely there will be an ICU bed for you when you get sick.

message 534: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I was fuming last night with Boris' speech. He managed to speak a lot and say not a lot with plenty of vagueness and contradiction. Ridiculous. Not ending lockdown, but basically ending lockdown. Not satisfied the criteria but going to do stuff anyway. People can go back to work. People can exercise as much as they like and hang out at the beach and in parks. With their mates as long as they socially distance. Schools, shops and restaurants etc are still closed though. It really is ridiculous. The tubes this morning were heaving and no social distancing in place. People going back to work when their employers haven't put in social distancing measures. But finally we have 14 day quarantine for people coming in to the UK. Unless your coming from France. WTF? Why did we not have that before? I'm so angry. We have the worst number of deaths in Europe, second in the world. And Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales don't agree so are going to do their own thing. We need to be united. The virus doesn't understand borders. And people do not understand. We still have a lot of new cases each day as well as deaths, yet we're relaxing lockdown. There will be a second spike for sure. The R number already went up in the last 2 weeks as people started getting bored with lockdown and going out more. Feels like we've just reverted to the herd immunity theory. They certainly aren't listening to the scientists now that's for sure.

Well, I'm just going to carry on as I have been. So is Rob. I had started to feel safe in my boat in the South West where the virus hasn't hit too hard compared to elsewhere in the country. But now, I'm back to panicking because everyone and his wife are going to come to the West Country for days out after being cooped up for 7 weeks. So ridiculous.

Rant over. Sorry.

People are still doing distant socializing, but you can notice it is hard. We have now the rule that you can socialize with maximum 4 friends/4 family members in the same social bubble and with 1,5m distance. Very strange. Here school are reopening today but presence is not mandatory. While it has not being said officially, we all know that it is a way to free parents that need to go back to work are things are slowly opening up. some shop are opened but with restriction. Most still encourage you to order online/phone and come and pick up. Restaurant are starting to open on a delivery/take out format.
I am still avoiding most of it. But I saw waiting line at the door of some shops while driving to the grocery store.

So far, people I have seen seems to behave. burt I am staying put as much as i can so I miss the "stupidity" I am sure is going on.

My mother (90yo) was talking about the day she will be able to go out. I understand she feel trapped but i really do not want her to go out for a bit. I have to point out with all the waiting line and protocol in place, just getting a liter of milk could not take lest than 30 minutes. Most of it being waiting lines and standing still for a long time is something she could not do. She has no idea how the "new normal" is outside.

There will be a second wave. Even the authority made it clear that the are relaxing the rules a bit, not because the crisis was over but because our health system could handle it. I hope i do not get to test this one soon. My take is that the later i get it (if i do), the more we will know and the protocol of treatment will be better later. It is still trial and error now.

I cannot wait too be able to garden. It is still cold out here. They even call for a bit of snow this week. We had the mildest of winters but it just does not want to let go.

message 537: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18549 comments I get that at some point things will have to open up, people go back to work, schools open etc. But when cases and deaths drop. The countries that are relaxing lockdown seem to have around 200 deaths a day and 1000 new cases. Which I personally think is still too high for reducing lockdown. Here in the UK, we still have around 4000 new cases each day and 600 deaths and that's with poor testing and massaging of statistics.

Today on the news, some MP said that you can now have a cleaner or child minder come in to your house. Yet you can't have friends or family members. That doesn't make sense. I think all the Tories are getting fed up of their messy houses and unruly children and that is what has driven their decision on that one.

And another crazy thing that popped up today is that 3 mass gathering/protests have been organised for this weekend, two of which are in one of the biggest towns near us. It is to protest the 'unlawful lockdown' and coronavirus bill. So the police are going to be out in force, and put at risk. If it were just the people who turn up at the event who got the virus and were quarantined, that would be ok, but they'll go infect other people.

We have been advised to wear facemasks here now. However, those who think they won't get the virus or think it's a load of rubbish won't wear them. And they are probably the ones more likely to be breaking social distancing and have the virus. And if the masks don't protect the wearer but stop those who are asymptomatic from spreading it, it's totally a waste of time it just being an advisory measure.

Urgh, I've had enough of our government and this virus now.

message 538: by Saar The Book owl (new)

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments Here the death toll is dropping under 100 deaths today (82 deaths) and 202 new cases. It's going down slowely.
Now the government wants everyone who is working in hospitals to get tested, even employees who don't work with patients or employees who do admittance and reception (like me), but it's only the normal tests (throat and nose). So, it's accurate if you have the virus at that moment, but you won't know if you'll allready got it. It isn't mandatory, but it's recommendated.
Last Monday the IKEA opened again and there was a line of 400 metres, same thing at Action, Primark...Otherwise, in the city it was very quiet in the shopping streets.

@Sarah: it isn't logical what the MP decided, but here the logic seems to be far away also. I understand that some people are against the lockdown, but it's not save to protest.
I don't wear a mask, unless I have to go shopping, but I only go out to get to work.

@Esther: as grimm as it is, I'm sure there will be a second wave. It's something we need to learn to live with, I'm afraid. But here there won't be a second lockdown, only for who got infected and I think that's okay as long as people keep their heads with it. The biggest issue that the lockdown was focussed on the economy. Groups like children, youth, vulnerable groups...were forgotten in the messures and that was a big mistake the governement made.

Sarah, how is your Dad doing?

My anxiety has been so high over last few days. What with Boris' blundering to Sadiq Khan burrying his head in the sand over our transport system and speculations on how furloughing of staff will continue in the future.

Then WestJet send me an email to say they have "adjusted" my flight but cannot provide an alternative - umh say what? So, off I go yo have a look to see that the "adjustment" is no flight into Canada but my flight home remains. No money back, just travel points to use with 2 years. No doubt my return flight will also be "adjusted" to nothing.....

Oh well, my family and friends are safe and remain healthy, I still have a roof over my head and I can put food on the table, (even though it is still either burnt to a crisp or frozen in the middle as my cooking skills have not yet improved!).

Sarah | 18549 comments Yes my anxiety has been high too Anna.

My dad went back to work last week and I have to say, his employer has beeen fantastic . They have provided ppe and hand washing stations, removed some desks from the office and placedd them elsewhere to spread people out, taped around desks so people know how close they can stand when speaking to someone sat at it, those who can work from home still are so there are only a handful of staff and when in the warehouse , my dad is at one end and his collague at the other. He has a very good employer who care about their staff and it helps that his manager has ocd so is on the cleanliness big time. Unfortunately ,other people won't be as lucky as my dad. Thanks for asking Anna. Very frustrating about your flights. I think there are going to be a lot off unhappy travellers this summer.

That is such good new Sarah re your Dad! Sounds like the company he works for has taken the situation very seriously.

All we can do is the best that we can. I work in the travel industry and I have no idea how we will continue if things don't pick up - that said, there is no way I would want anyone put at risk. Time will tell.

Have a great day!

Janice (jamasc) | 59882 comments I have an appointment with my hairdresser today. Very strict rules are in place. I'm to text her when I arrive and she will let me in when she lets her previous client out. Face masks are to be worn, hand washing/sanitizing, etc. She has asked for payment by etransfer because she's disabled her pos system.

So, mask shaming... A friend posted a meme on Facebook that said something to the effect that it's silly if you are alone in your car wearing a face mask. So, if I put on my mask at my hairdresser's, doesn't it make sense to leave it on to go to fill up the propane tank and then to the grocery store? A person risks contamination if you take your mask on and off. Why would one do that just so you don't look silly in your car?

It may be silly, as in there is no point, if you do not stop anywhere. For example I went to drop some stuff on my parent porch. I did not interact with anyone. But it makes sense in your context. And as for looking silly? I think it is the new normal and really, who cares? :)

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments I think I'm having a panic attack about all the corona measures...I just want to have things back to normal. I can't relax, I feel scared, tensed...That's not me. Now in the news they said that if the schools need to have the 1,5m distance rule, they can't re - open the school with the normal rules, like before the corona. So, not all of the kids can go back to school in September. How long can this go on? It's hard to manage pre - teaching, work, household. It's like no one from higher up sees the impact on the children, on the parents, that they can't take it very much longer. There's no news yet about the Summer: can children go to playcamps or not? Because we need to work too.
Yesterday I was talking to another horse owner at the stable and we all have our apointment scheduled when we can go. She was new and we talked a lot and my time went up 20 min. ago. The stable boss was angry that I took more time then provided. I can understand her, but it was in the open air and with the needed distance.
I'm fed up with it. I go between work and home, no moment for myself, I barely read...As an introvert I don't have friends, but strangely I miss having friends. I just need someone to talk to. To feel normal.
Sorry, I didn't mean to rant. I'm not usely like that...

Sarah | 18549 comments I totally understand your anxiety Saar. I too am feeling it. And i don't even have kids to contend with. I've had a difficult week especially as my asthma has been bad which makes me worry more. I too have started to miss my friends who live further afield who i normally see once a month. I have friends locally but i don't get the same depth of conversation that i do with the others. That's what i miss most. Intelligent conversations about stuff other than coronavirus. I am also missing my work, or should i say hypnosis as a subject, so I'm going to start watching some seminars to keep my hand in.

Sarah | 18549 comments Oh and rant away Saar, i have been in this thread. Oh and I'm very much an introvert too. I thought I'd have no problem with self isolation in that regard but obviously not.

Saar The Book owl | 2648 comments @Sarah: with you're asthma, are you having trouble also because of the hay fever? I can understand too: it's the conversations with more depth that I miss. Are you a hypnotic therapist? Well, my thought exatly: I was convienced that I'll be okay. Being an introvert is a bit like the lockdown. So, I thought that I wouldn't have difficulties with self isolation. Thought that wrong...It's more confronting than normal.
