Were they these created by Bantam publishers? Had an arch on the front cover with scenes depicted from the story? They were published as a series from 1979-1998.
The jungle one, was it Jungle Safari Edward Packard 1983 or African Safari by Richard Brightfield, 1993, book 24 Lost on the Amazon R. A. Montgomery 1983.
There were the series that were for younger readers, Gorga the Space Monster looked like a hippo.. and the Dream Trips.

It's not the Pick-A-Path series? The covers of Jungle Adventure and Murf the Monster kind of merge to make the cover you were thinking of:
Jungle Adventure
Murf the Monster
The pick-a-path series is definitely in the ball park. However, It wasn't any of these, thanks though. The artwork was very detailed and not too cartoony like most children's books. It was on the same level as The Eleventh Hour which was another favorite, but they were definitely published well before it .
I think you are looking for Jungle of Peril. Here's a link to the whole series the author put out.https://www.amazon.ca/s?i=stripbooks&...
YES! Thanks! These are the best, so glad I could track them down again with your help. Time to introduce them to a new generation of readers!
Absolutely, my pleasure. I was in your same boat not too long ago and was racking my brain with different google descriptions to find it. I have fond memories of going through the Jungle of Peril!Ethen wrote: "I think you are looking for Jungle of Peril. Here's a link to the whole series the author put out.

What I remember about these books were the artwork. They were basically an I-spy/choose your own adventure for 6-8 yo. I am not sure if there was a series, but there were at least two. One was a jungle type adventure and the other was on an alien planet. One would progress through the book by finding certain objects or finishing mazes to go to certain pages later on in the book so it's not linear at all.
These would have been published in the early to mid-80's. The cover of the jungle one had a river or lake with hippos in it that were to be used like stepping stones. Following them would get you to areas that would lead to page x or y. The spine looked almost like little golden books, but yellow instead of gold. I have been trying to track these down for ages!
Thanks!
