Sizzrian | 1 comments I think the cover of the book is green and it was written probably after 2000 and definitely before 2004 (when I read it)

The main character is a girl and she 'dies' and is able to resurrect and choose her body as she's at it, which is apparently something everyone can do in this society. The people live in domes, with desert outside. The girl has no idea what her path in life is anymore and wanders aimlessly throughout the book. She goes to a museum and sees holographic exhibits, goes into a store where people don't pay with money but rather with gratitude (the more expensive the item the more they adulate in front of the store clerks. She doesn't thank the clerk at all, making it 'stealing'.

As no one really dies, there isn't really concept of parenthood. Nor is there a concept of commitment to any one person.

She ends up getting a pet for herself and in the end goes on a ship on an expedition to the desert.

*****Spoilers***** The pet ends up dying (don't remember how) and she finds some sort of catharsis in the desert when it starts to rain and things bloom just as she is about to die.

I would do anything to find this book again, the memory of it has been haunting me for 10 years...but I can't remember any names at all (honestly I'm not even sure any names were given).

Aerulan | 1317 comments Biting the Sun by Tanith Lee, great book.

ETA actually going by your description, you might be looking for the first book Don't Bite the Sun.
Biting the Sun is a collection of that and Drinking Sapphire Wine the second book. That said, I absolutely recommend you get the collected edition, the second half is excellent too.

Sizzrian, can you confirm the book is one of those suggested by Aerulan, or are you still looking?

Great, let's call this Solved. Moving out of Abandoned where I don't believe it should have been!
