About a gang and a kid named Paul??

So I had to read this book in my English class. Not sure if it’s a story or a play. I am pretty sure the main character is called Paul. He has a mum, dad and little sister. He gets involved with a gang at school. There is an initiation where he has to walk across a beam that sits over a gaping hole and when he tries to leave the gang they trick his sister into doing the initiation and he has to save her. His dad performs at a mall I think?? Anyway that’s all I can really remember but I am desperate to find this book. Please help.
