MEG (zoomer_karen) | 22 comments I believe I read this in 2014 or 15.
This is the first book in the series where an officer in the military- or maybe a major- is high enough in rank to be invited to lavish parties on a cruise spaceship and he thinks a lot about how they waste their wealth for something like that, since he grew up poor and knows what its like to be looked down on by the rich. The girl is the doughter of -I think- the owner of the spaceship and she is spoiled. The ship ends up getting close to this weird planet that makes the ship crash. Everyone rushes to get to escape pods but I believe only the rich girl and major/officer are the only survivors and they land on said planet that is super weird and I think these willow-the-wisp things mess with them while they are there. They end up learning to trust eachother and survive on the planet, believing they are going to be stuck there forever.

I read the second book first -I believe it just came out- which had a girl soldier who was mentored by the officer in the first book-the one I'm asking about- and she was kidnapped from a bar on the planet she is stationed on by a boy from a local community who is sabotaging the company that is hurting the mysterious species that the rich girl and officer discovered in the first book. This mysterious willow-the-wisp type things can create illusions and stuff from nothing. I believe there are three books in this series. The third I didn't read but that one was about a hacker and a thief? that reluctantly team up to take down a company - maybe the same one in the second book.

The covers of all the books have a galaxy background with the two main characters floating away from eachother but reaching for the other. The first one had the officer in a silver uniform I believe and the rich girl in this elegant, ruffle dress, maybe blue or red, possibly pink. The second has the soldier girl in the silver uniform and the rebel boy in similar clothes. I don't remember the third.

You should read The Academy. I think you'd like it based on the description of this book
