Calvin Ye English 101 Final: The Crying of Lot 49 Research Review
The name of the book is The Crying of Lot 49. The author of the book is Thomas Pynchon and the book was made in 1965 or 1966. The author created this book to tell us about a woman’s role of being the main character, her journey to find her purpose and the legacy of a historical figure. Thomas wrote this book in a woman’s point of view. In the story, the main character was Oedipa Maas. She was a lonely person who was in a loveless marriage and her husband was too busy to spend time with his wife. During the story, Oedipa has a very good character development. She went from a lonely housewife to become an intelligent woman. The author is trying to show her development throughout the story. I agree with Pynchon because I believe that she was having a difficult time talking with people at first. “Either than he made up the whole thing, Oedipa thought suddenly, or he bribed the engineer over the local station to run this, it’s all part of a plot, an elaborate, seduction, plot. O’Metzger.” She thought that the lawyer was to going seduce her by having her sing along with him. She did eventually have sex with him. I disagree with this because he book was created for all readers but there are some things that are not appropriate for the readers. In the other chapters, Oedipa have one too many sex scenes. The sex scenes will be possibly be imitated by the readers. If the parents figure out that the readers are having sex and are inspired by the sex scenes from the book, they will tried to get this book banned from the libraries and from schools. The theme of the book is love. In the story, Oedipa is in a loveless marriage. During the story, Oedipa met a man name Mucho. Oedipa and Mucho fell in love with each other. “At the station they kissed goodbye, all of them.” It argues that Oedipa love the guy with all her heart. I agree with this because love is the most important thing in the world. Love makes people happier and stronger. For example, Oedipa had no love but she found it when she met Mucho. As the story progress, Oedipa eventually become an intelligent person. The example of this is that she learned of the Tristero and his legacy. She decided to do research on Tristero and learn about him. With that new knowledge of her, she eventually went to participate in the auction and tried to obtain the historical stamps of Tristero which is his legacy. Another example of her being an intelligent person is that she is able to use the different occupations and her experience that she have to her advantage. I and Oedipa have some similarities. For example, I and she were both lonely people. She and I weren’t smart at first. As time by, I and Oedipa both started to become an intelligent person by reading and learning about the world and its history as much as we can. The biggest difference that me and Oedipa is that she found true love with a man that she met and I have found false love with a girl that I met.
