I went for a number of years without picking up a book. I was a voracious reader as a kid and would read literally anything. When I started high school I figured partying, chasing guys and getting into trouble was a better way to spend my time. I only read a handful of books during those 4 years, one being THE HAPPY HOOKER which I looked upon as educational! I didn't read anything other than magazines or a newspaper until we came to Colorado in 1978. I read a review of a book called THE PROUD BREED and went out and bought it and THE THORN BIRDS and haven't looked back since. I don't know why I didn't pick up any books during that almost 8 years time. I suppose if I were unable to read and it wasn't my choice I'd go nuts!
If it's any consolation, you will be so busy and so tired during basic training, that it shouldn't affect you too much. Of course, books will probably be one of the things you miss most while there, but you'll have plenty to keep you occupied. ;)
lol, true. Then I'll probably get back and have to read for a month straight to catch up on all of the new books that I missed!
Goodreads got me back into reading. I use to read like crazy growing up. Now i'm at the library almost once a week.
I'm a new member to goodreads and I've stopped reading a few days ago because i got addicted to this site.
This is just something that's been going through my head lately. I've been seriously thinking about joining the National Guard next summer (there are reasons why I can't join now and would have to wait). But if I do, I would go to Basic Training for 9-10 weeks and books are not allowed! I don't think that I've ever gone more than 2 days in my life without reading! Even when I was little, my parents would ground me from my books, so I learned to hide some throughout my room so that when that happened, I still had some to read!
Anyways, just wondering if anyone else has any experience giving up books!
