Children's Picture Book about a ghost/will-o-wisp who rescues children from a bog/forest

In the late 1990s (Australia) I had a children's book, about a ghost/will-o-wisp that rescued some lost children/people from the bog/forest outside a small village.

I think the children went to explore the forest, but were told they had to be home before dark. And there was a myth in the village about the woods being haunted? But actually when the children (or the people that went to find them?) got lost after dark, the ghost (which was actually some kind of will-o-wisp) helped them find their way home. But then they explained it as just being a lantern light?

I can't remember anything else about it, except that it was beautifully illustrated with fine lines and minimal colour, and maybe with some elaborate borders framing each illustration. TIA!
