SOLVED. Book about a young boy who is a cartoonist and draws birds. [s]

Book about a young boy, maybe 11 or 12, who draws cartoon strips all the time. One of his main characters is a bird, because he is “pigeon-toed” from wearing his shoes on the wrong feet when he was younger. Lives with his mom and grandma, and his older brother is perfect to his mom. Has a friend named tree I think. He works on his cartoons in his attic and hides up there in protest one day and doesn’t go to school for a few days. It ends with him leaving the attic. I can remember everything about it except the title. Read about 8 years ago, probably from the 90’s though. Please help!

Sounds like The Cartoonist. The main character, Alfie, even has a friend named Tree in the book.
