there is a lot of depressing statements and gore In the light brigade. I figured we could make a thread of our favorite bleakest parts like we did favorite quotes from Hogfather could be fun. debated making this tread but the fact that Gideon the ninth's voice kept popping in my head saying That's seriously messed up clinched it for me.

I like the part towards the end where Diets explains her ideal death to her interrogator. won't quote it here might have a spoiler but manages somehow to be Bleak and Gory and yet still optimistic like the book itself. she really wants to be dug up by foxes so her body will feed a family. that's some serious messed up shit!
The book was a bit too bleak for my state of mind these days, though I thought it was technically well done.

I can only hope for such a death as well

On the one hand, this book was dark. On the other, it felt very now. There were a lot of issues that seemed relevant in the world in the 2020's. Even a medical epidemic.

"We urge anyone with flu-like symptoms to report to the nearest corporate wellness center. We are working diligently on a vaccine and expect it to be in trials very soon..." (pg 190 in my edition)
"The lies kept us going. Gave us hope. Without lies we have to face the truth long before we are ready for it. Long before we are prepared to fight it." (198)
"Sometimes, to save the world, you have to let it break." (262)
"Our lives are finite. Our bodies imperfect. We shouldn't spend it feeding somebody else's cause." (325)
All I know is, I don't personally feel compelled to prove the emperor has no clothes or doesn't by going to church on easter, if you get my meaning.
When the soldier came back with her arm through her chest. That was messed up.Or when Landon exploded all over her. Or when Dietz came back covered in his blood and she didn't know how or who.

Yep. This is the one.
