I went to my library today, but it was to drop off a book. I have Robt. McCammon's Boy's Life on a hold, but it hasn't arrived there yet.

message 3: by Synn (new)

Synn | 39 comments Well I need to return a few books that are due by tomorrow, so I am hoping they arrive soon. It will save me a trip.

I ride my bicycle to the library when I go. It's about 4.5 miles round trip. I used to walk it, too. It's an excuse to get out of the house and get some sunshine and exercise. I don't mind making numerous trips. :)

Lyndl | 25 comments I don't belong to a Library any more. They expect you to give the books back !!!

Kathy (littlemissred3) | 804 comments I live in a small town in the desert, with a small library, and they very seldom have books I like, so if it's not too expensive, I try and get from amazon. My husband now has me on a book amount limit!

message 7: by Synn (new)

Synn | 39 comments Oh no! I suppose it could always be worse. I am debating if I want to do books online or not, I love holding a book. It's is crazy now when i go to research a book, i have to specify that is a hard cover or paperback.....

message 8: by Synn (new)

Synn | 39 comments The website just assumes I am searching for an ebook. ugh.

message 9: by Rachel (new)

Rachel (rachelrachelrachelrachel) I don't use the library because Amazon is fairly cheap and we have a used bookstore here that will give a great trade in value, so I just trade in my books that I don't want to keep :)

Interlibrary loan usually works really well! I had, at one point in my life, overcome the book addiction. I had limited purchases to those books that I needed for work and that might prove difficult to find later. Then I joined the book club sponsored by Schoenhof´s (foreign language books, it was the ¨Mecca¨´ for foreign language books pre-Amazon), and the addiction rears its ugly head once a month. If they´re reading something for club that I don´t own, and I want to purchase it, I do try to purchase it from them, since that bookstore and club has become a bright spot in my existence....but I loved used stores the most, when I´m looking for classics in English! Unfortunately, I´m in a small city and we only have one. It´s a great one, though! Don´t know how long the owner will hold on. When I moved here 15 years ago, I traded in some old ones (they don´t want my foreign language books :( ....I went back this summer, expecting to find the 3x5 note card with my $15 credit on it long gone, after 15 years....Nope! He still had it! In the ¨been here so long they´re dusty¨ pile!

Catherine McClelland (rugbydeprofundis) | 5 comments I rediscovered my public library about six months ago and I get all the books I desire to read through inner library loans. It is fantastic!

HAHAHA!

Well, when my 10,000+ personal library began to take over my home, I decided to lighten the load and start letting the library store my favorite books for me. They have much more room than I do. ;)

I've been an online book buyer for over a decade and half. I do NOT buy from Amazon... or any of the major sellers like Borders or Barnes, etc. I buy used books from independents who host their inventories on sites like Alibris and ABE. I use a search engine called AddAll to find the books I want from these indie sellers. I rarely ever spend more than $3 for a book, be it hardcover or paperback. You just have to be patient when you search...

Have fun. :)

Indeed! My local library participates in the ILL. I LOVE it! I've borrowed books from the other side of the country before. They come directly to my little local branch. I check them out and return them just like regular loaner books here at my branch. My local library ships the book back to its home library once I return it. Pretty COOL!

message 16: by Linda (new)

Linda | 615 comments I'm lucky in that I'm connected to the university's ILL, which surprisingly is way faster than the ILL at UW-Madison ever was! Of course, some of the lending libraries are really harsh-ay with the return times, and UW-Madison's library had so much of what I needed....sigh! It's always possible that you can't ILL something through the public library if it's rare, and for that I love Alibris, too!

The interlibrary loan here only connects with the jr college and one other small library here and the next biggest town here to us is Odessa tx. I've never seen a bookstore there other than a Hastings Entertainment store. Alot of options here wouldn't you say? lol

message 19: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (littlemissred3) | 804 comments SUPPOSED to be reading this book for another group, but I just can't get into it despite the good reviews. Maybe it's the season? Drop it or carry on?

message 20: by Synn (new)

Synn | 39 comments Sorry I poofed all. Im in the same boat Kathy.. I picked up a book at the library, and just found out it got two star reviews. I dropped it.

Yep, my library is stingy that way also. How can they expect to retain customers with an attitude like that?
