I read this book twice last year (2019) it was sort of a reverse beauty and the beast. She was skin and bones, orphaned, and plain and he was a once soldier eligible bachelor who didn’t trust women. I remember his friends/ranch hands ordered him a mail order bride anyways but they didn’t tell him. The owner of the ads has a grudge against the hero so he sent his ugliest girl to meet him. She doesn’t know that. Hero doesn’t want her and because she has nothing she asks to stay on as his cook. He agrees until he can find a man more suitable for the position. She thought he picked her because of a picture in the paper where she saves two young girls in a fire, and their rich father rewards her with enough money to buy her freedom. He slowly starts to fall for her, but the man who sent her comes to kill her as revenge. They also had a run in with they were children when she was a little girl living on the streets and they played little John, and Robin Hood, men tried to take him but she saves his life. So he gives her a lucky coin/pendant to remember him by.

I also remember when the hero comes home from war he goes home and thinks they’re having a party for him but it’s his fiancé marrying his brother, which is why he doesn’t want women working on his ranch, and doesn’t want to marry.

There was also an incident when he tries to take her to train a station and he ends up breaking his leg. She gets on the horse and races back to the ranch to get help. She ends up helping him get better so the rest of the members can go on their bill run.
