SOLVED. Picture book about dealing with nightmares. [s]

It's about a boy named ?Tom? who has nightmares about household tools, including garden shears and a washing machine, coming to life. His parents try to help him by showing him the tools are harmless, and explaining that they aren't alive. The refrain is:

>> “I know,” said Tom, “But it doesn't seem to make any difference.”

I can't remember how it ends, the title, or the author. I read it about 30 years ago, and really want to read it again, and share it with others.
