Paranormal mystery: church in woods with magical powers to talk to dead loved ones

Plot: post Civil war (I think) man was injured in war and lost sight. His best friend was killed in war along side him. He’s back home and the widow of his fallen friend lives across the street from him and takes care of him. Towns people discover an abandoned church in the middle of woods. Towns folk are drawn to it. This church puts them in a trance like state and they are able to communicate with dead loved ones. The longer they stay in there though the closer to death they become themselves Andy hey become obsessed With visiting. Word gets out about this place and people from all over start visiting the town and church. A mysterious man moves to the town and builds a home on top of hill over looking town. The widow from across street starts to spend all her time at this house on the hill (when she’s not at the church).
