SOLVED. Short story about a family who retreat from unseen guests day by day from the rooms of their house. [s]

Hi all, this is my first post - thank you for any help.

What I definitely remember: It is a short story. There is a family in a large house. They believe other people (or perhaps not even people) have begun to occupy one room of their house, and their reaction is simply to seal of that part of the house, get out with what they can, and retreat into the rest of the house. This happens slowly, day-by-day, room-by-room, they simply become aware that they have lost the drawing room, and retreat further, with fewer of their worldly goods.

What I'm fairly sure I remember: I believe (view spoiler)[ they eventually leave and just surrender the house to the new occupants they never see. (hide spoiler)]

I believe it is from Latin America, so likely originally in Spanish, and I believe it was from the first part of the 20th century.

Your description reminds me of the film "The Others" (2001) with Nicole Kidman. It's directed by Alejandro Amenábar who wrote the script, but I don't see a book credit on IMDB:
