Angharad | 98 comments Possibly The Secret of the Ruby Ring? It's set in Ireland and the main character ends up traveling back in time after wishing on a ring that her grandmother gave her. In order to return to the present, she has to find the ring and make a second wish.

I believe it spawned something of a series, and the author's revisited the ring a few times since.

Melinda, are you still looking for this or did you find it?

Sarah | 3 comments This isn't the Song of the Lioness series by Tamora Pierce, is it? The last book in the series, Lioness Rampant, features the main character Alanna trying to find the Dominion Jewel, though it was published in 1988. The Dominion Jewel is also mentioned in the third book in the series, The Woman Who Rides Like a Man, which was published in 1986. Alanna has red hair on all the covers as well. It's set in an alternate fantasy world (Tortall) though, not the UK.
