Nicole R (drnicoler) | 8088 comments Definitely not the platform for me to get into an in-depth political discussion, since we have a range of party affiliation and ideological beliefs in this group, all from people I enjoy and respect. I will just leave it at hoping I am wrong. ;)

Sadly, I agree.:(

Look at all these pro-life yayhoos who are saying we should sacrifice our lives for the good of the economy. Sorry, I'm of an age, but I'm not taking one for Trump or any of them. I could continue the rant but I won't.

Theresa | 15559 comments Right now I believe Andrew Cuomo could be nominated as the Democratic candidate without campaigning. And ultimately win the election.

Trump is so good at rallying his base even if by following his edicts they have no food to put on the table, no job, and die because he was incapable of leading the country in a pandemic.

Amy | 12932 comments Nicole is truly such a resource as our resident legal expert. Everyone is saying this about Cuomo. But isn’t it too late? I mean head he was an out as a shining star or had entered earlier and ultimately this could be the case. Aren’t people just wishful thinking? There really is no route for him to enter now, is there? Most people are talking about him for 2024.

Elise - you could just order a new lamp from Wayfair or a new bulb or lamp or both from Amazon. They will leave in lobby of your building and you can ask the super to put it outside your door. Wayfair just delivered my new dexk chair..big discounts pkus promo code AND free delivery. Amazon just delivered to me new batteries for my digital thermometer ( I am not sick, just daily monitoring). Mailman put Amazon outside my door and super brought up Wayfair box.

Or you can pretend this is pioneer times and get up at dawn and go to sleep when dark.

Thanks for the advice on my poor lamp! Right now I'm fine living without (thankfully it's spring, the days are getting longer, so even normally I wouldn't turn it on before after supper), and if it gets problematic, I have a few options. Another similar less important lamp in my house I could take the bulb from, my mom still needs to come here every so often to make sure I don't starve, a friend offered to drop one off... There are many more important things going on than my lamp, I'm just quite irritated at its shitty timing XD

I have respect for news media who refuse to repeat every thing he says. Honestly I think the media gave him much too much airtime during the election, and they constantly repeated the worst things he said (starting with his early comments on mexicans). That repetition strengthened latent racist thinking in people who otherwise wouldn't say most of those thing. I hated when I heard people say: "He's only saying what other people are thinking" because I give people more credit than that.

LOL! I know it's not really funny. I can't stand my current provincial premier, and I consider him "Trump-lite" (along with Ontario's premier), but he's not been terrible through COVID.

Luckily, he mostly doesn't talk all that much - he leaves that to the head doctor in the province (whom everyone loves!) - the Chief Medical something is her title.

Speaking of this... I don't have a smartphone, and my flip phone is never really turned on. Meant for emergencies, really... or I will give it to friends if I'm meeting someone somewhere.

I also have a landline - a cordless phone. Which is what I've asked work to call me on if they need to, as we all work from home.

Well - this is where the shitty timing comes in for me - as I've been on the phone a few times this week with various people for longer amounts of time than usual, it turns out I need a new battery for my cordless phone. It's not giving me a whole lot of time to talk (well, maybe it's been about half an hour? Maybe a bit more), before it starts beeping at me that it needs to recharge. Sigh...

I am also not sick, but I coughed (slightly more than normal - I do tend to cough fairly often, anyway) just over a week ago, so I was planning to stay in for another week before even venturing out for groceries (a friend brought me a few yesterday).

I do have someplace to call to see if they still (they used to) carry batteries for cordless phones, and if they do, do they have the one I need. I'm hoping to make it another week (and I'm hoping they carry them), then head over to pick up a replacement battery next weekend.

I’m having battery issues with my phones too (I have many extras), and my laptop. It only holds a charge for about an hour now. It’s an internal battery, and the charger port (hole) looks warped, so I can’t just replace the battery myself. I have to prop the laptop on its edge to keep a connection with the charger prong. now. It’s not worth it to get it fixed, and I laptop shopping, especially now that I have to do it online. I feel so stupid trying to figure out the differences between different models. All I know for sure is that I want a 2 in 1, a 15 inch screen, and better than i3. I’ve had charger connection issues with my last 2 computers, Maybe because I move it around so much.

:-( That's unfortunate you can't just replace the battery. It's like making things so they'll die so you are forced to go buy a new one. I hate that - it's so wasteful! (Also making replacement parts and labour cost more than something new - wasteful! Boo)

My hubby's best friend from high school, who was in intensive care with COVID19 is now HOME !!!!

This is a man with diabetes, asthma, heart disease who is near 80.

His illness started with GI symptoms (diarrhea), then slight fever. He was home with daily phone contact with his physician for about a week before his worsening symptoms resulted in a 9-1-1 call and transfer to hospital. But his hospital stay was 6 days.

Michael (mike999) | 569 comments Am wondering if any of you have any insights from any experiences of using telehealth in this period of relaxed regulations. I have worked for 10 years with a grant -funded telehealth resource center (web hub for 12 centers: https://www.telehealthresourcecenter.org), and am busy helping address the deluge of TA queries and keep up on news and literature resources. My categorical compilation of resources has got some national attention, with citation in a Medicare toolkit and National Gov. Assoc. advisory. Not consumer oriented, but the curious about scope and aspirations of telehealth to make a difference you can peek at my compilation:

message 281: by Amy (new)

Amy | 12932 comments First of all, Michael I am so sorry that I never really got back to you to answer you twice when you wrote to me. I meant to every time, I have been swamped, even during this time of quasi quarantine. I recognize that’s no excuse, but I at least wanted to acknowledge it. I hope you are doing well, and I think of you and appreciate your comments so much.

It might be obvious to many, but I have been following the switch to telehealth incredibly closely. My colleagues were amongst the first when things were beginning to shut down to make the call to move immediately to telehealth, and almost everybody’s practices have gone that way. Within a day or two all of the insurance companies were saying that they would reimburse, whether or not it was initially part of their plan. Many of the insurance companies are also taking over the cost share, meaning that they are covering the deductibles and co-pays as well. My colleagues and I are talking a lot about the experience of it and what makes it different or similar, better or easier. One of my closest friends works for a telehealth platform, and she is saying she gets six new referral today. While I would rather not take new referrals in this format. That said a lot of clinicians are jumping in to help people in need right now. Many are doing it for free or giving up extra hours just to be there for folks. I notice many of my old patients coming back. I certainly think zoom is far less intimate and a lot of the deeper work can’t happen. I don’t think I would shift my practice there regularly. Although I do have a pretty depth for case in California, that’s highly complex. But it’s somebody I did incredibly deep work with 10 to

In any case, I think the platform has a lot of merit to it. And although it’s not my preferred, I’m very grateful for it now. And especially grateful that the insurances are being supportive. I don’t know if that answers your question, but there certainly a rise.

Amy | 12932 comments Karin! Our network which is probably the same, was supposed to reopen on April 16, although I thought that was early. I just got a notice yesterday that the library is closed indefinitely and that my books aren’t due until June 30! I want to tell this to all of you guys, because I imagined that if I need certain books for the May Tag or Bingo or Unofficial Trim, I might have to turn to Amazon! On the other hand however, I do believe I made my trim list to actually match the books that line the hallway. In most cases.

Book Concierge (tessabookconcierge) | 8422 comments My local indie bookseller got an "educational resource" exemption. They are NOT open to the public for browsing. But staff is at work each day, taking phone or website-orders. You must pay by credit card in advance. They notify you if your books are in stock or have to be ordered. If the latter, they notify you when your order has arrived.

You drive to the store, park at the curb and call them. A clerk unlocks the door, places your package on a metal cart that sits right outside the door. Store clerk goes back inside and re-locks the door. You exit your car, retrieve your package, return to your car and drive away.

Of course, they will also mail / ship to you. Or deliver (if you are close enough to the store (and/or an employee's home). But I kinda like the excuse opportunity to go for a little drive to the store.

message 292: by Jgrace (new)

Jgrace | 3944 comments I've been to my credit union twice in the past five days. I had to deposit large checks from money market accounts that I held jointly with my children. (Their money, not mine, and they need the cash). Last week, the branch had limited hours and they were limiting the number of people inside and maintaining distance with marked circles on the floor. No one was wearing masks or gloves.

Today, at the same branch, I was told that I would need an appointment. Everyone was in gloves and masks. However, I was told that I could make the deposit at the ATM and that they would waive the hold that would usually be placed on the check.

I'm really happy to see this. I wish every business could have this level of precaution. There are restaurants next to the bank. Customers going in and out for take out orders. No precautions whatever.

message 293: by NancyJ (new)

NancyJ (nancyjjj) | 11084 comments My bank is strictly drive through and by appointments. I made an appointment to get a form notarized, and we'll do it all via the drive through window. Mine is now May 18.

I recommend putting in purchase suggestions for ebooks and e-audiobooks. My library has been very responsive. I suggested a purchase early this month and they had it online within a few days.

message 295: by Robin P (new)

Robin P | 5760 comments I just joined this group recently and have been reading through various threads. This one is fascinating as it records spaces various people and places have gone through in the last month. It's as if you were all writing a historical document for your own The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. I can identify with the way our conversations and choices changed over the past 30 days. I can't help wondering about all the fiction and nonfiction books that will be written about this time.

My library system had a special fundraising drive to purchase a lot more audiobooks and ebooks during this time. There was a matching gift so I made a donation. I also subscribed to libro.fm, which is a service like Audible for audiobooks but the proceeds go to your local independent bookstore. This way I feel noble while continuing to enjoy books. I have enough print books in my house to be quarantined for several years and not run out, but for anyone who doesn't, if you want physical books cheaply, there are sites like thriftbooks and Daedalus books that have low prices, also on eBay, people sometimes sell whole series or groups of books.

With virtual notarization you have to be careful. If the notarized document has to be recorded like a deed or mortgage or filed in court like a petition, it has to meet very specific protocals which in some areas are still being determined. If it is just an affidavit or document not being recorded like a general release, then virtual notary is likely ok.

Check with whoever you are giving the signed notarized document to in order to figure out if virtual online is ok.

Let me just say that as a lawyer, I am just as challenged in coping with this as all of you. Maybe more so.

I just think the staff at my library has been too busy the last 2 weeks setting up on-line events to worry about someone changing the date. But, I am sure it will happen in the next few days. I am on my last of the 11 books I checked out -and I am savoring it, one chapter a day, as it is a new book I have been aching to read. I have piles of owned books, but at the rate I am reading I know when this is over I will have to re-stock heavily.

You're right Nikki. Most of my banking is done electronically, but I've used the app on occasion when I've had a check to deposit. But, usually there's an amount limit with the app and possibly at the atm. These checks were unusual because they were made out to me as custodian for my adult children. They were from accounts my father invested in when they were children. My name should have been removed years ago. We certainly did the paperwork with the financial advisors.... So to expedite things and avoid the need for a notary, the checks came to me. I'd been advised that I would have to sign in the presence of bank employee with 2 forms of i.d.

Long story. I know from my first trip, that I am far from the only person cashing checks from investment accounts. Credit union membership might have made things easier, but they waived procedures to transfer the funds quickly and did a good job of protecting their employees.
