Alexandra O'Connor The book I chose to read was, “If I was your girl” By Meredith Russo. The book is about young adult navigating her way being trans. This book was very inspiring to read, and it was so comforting to read that Amanda has such supportive parents who were with her every step of the way during her transition. They got her on hormones early and she got gender confirmation surgery and did not struggle any financial burden. While it was comforting to read this, unfortunately that is not the reality for most people. A lot of trans people today have no support and are horribly bullied. They are not even treated as a human being, but society views them as a creature. Sadly, Amanda did deal with the bullying when living in Atlanta with her mom. Her peers become aware of her transition and bullied her so bad she was considering suicide. Eager for a fresh start, Amanda moves to her dads house in another state where nobody knows her past. As she started her new life in Atlanta, she had many positive things happening to her. Popular new friends, and even dating the football star who accepted her for being trans. Sadly, Bee who she trusted betrayed her and shared her secret with the school. Unfortunately there were a dangerous interaction of another football player attacking and sexually assaulting her due to her being trans. This book was hard to put down. I kept wanting to read and read because it was so engaging. It was real and raw. Stuff like this happens every single day to people who are trying to live their authentic life but cant because society doesn't allow it. I hope and pray that one day we will live in a world where everyone is accepted for who they are. I am so glad I chose this book to read as it has given me a much better understanding of the LGBTQ community and the obstacles they have to face everyday. They are so strong and I proudly support all LGBTQ communities.
