Beth Stewart | 644 comments I finished this one. Can’t say it was one of my favourites. Found the work situations to be unrealistic.

Pat Cody | 160 comments I agree with you, Beth, that this book would never pass for a police procedural with so little procedure in it. At times it felt the story was more about Matilda Darke's struggle to regain reality than about the murders, past and present. Jonathan seemed too weak a character throughout the book to be where he was at the end. With the acting DCI also dealing with emotional challenges, the story seemed more about abnormal psychology than solving crimes. Reading this book could easily lead to depression, if you felt its characters represented real folk. Though it was generally well written in style and language use, the author was stingy with commas, making for odd sentences now and then. I'd give it a 3.5 on a 5 scale.

Erunyauve | 167 comments My take on Jonathan is that he wasn't entirely as non-functional as he appeared. He definitely knew what he was doing when the acting DCI questioned him.

I rather liked the more psychlogical approach, though I agree that the acting DCI (whose name I still can't remember) was a bit over the top. I'd give it 3.5 of 5 as well.

You have to be correct about Jonathan, Erunyauve. I just didn't pick up on the clues to his true nature. He had to be functional to hold the job in the bookstore and do it well.

Brian Kirk | 24 comments I found the book interesting, I read the prequel before I read this book so I felt I had a little more background.

I didn't know there was a prequel. That sounds interesting. Does it go into Matilda's previous case?
